A couple of young larks, yesterday af
ternoon, placed tlu msolves outside of a
quart of whisky, and then placed thern-
>1 lve>. whisky and all, in a buggy, and
went to take a ride. They drove through
the street at a rate of speed that is pro
hibits! by the rules of strict propriety
aml*thc eitv code, and to the intense dis-
Rotisfactnm of people who happened ta |
be on the* street. A peeler saw them and
stepped them until he could reason the
matter a bttle; but as they were not
open to conviction l»e tiH*k them in tow
and landed them in u cell in the barracks,
and then took the hor.-e and buggy to the
►table where they belonged.
During the evening a friend of the
young larks called to get them out of
limbo; but when told that a deposit of
twenty dollars, as collateral, would secure*
their relive.he said he did not love them
that much, and left them to their fate in j

The readers of the Telegraph and
! Mkhenger will remember that some
j time since the wholesalo dealers in molt
I liquors took concerted action with a view
j to inducing the Governor to suspend the
l collection of the special tax upon whole
sale dealers in malt liquors until after
the meeting of the General Assembly.
It will be remembered that by tho
tax law passed at the last session a j
special tax of $250 was assessed upon I
each wholesale dealer in malt liquors.
The ground taken by the Macon mer
chants was that the Law was unjust, in thr.t
it discriminates against the merchants of j
Georgia and in favor of the merchants of
other States. The fact is, tho law, if
enforced, would amount to a virtual pro
hibition of the importation of molt
liquors by tho merchant* of Georgia, and
would have 6ent retailers to other States
to purchase their supplies.
It is certain that the Legislature nev
er contemplated such a discrimination
against tho merchant* of the State; and
believing this, tho Moron merchants be
lieved that tho Governor could be induced
to suspend the collection of the tax. Ac
cordingly they met and framed a proper
appeal to tho Governor, invoking, at the
same time, the co-operation of the mer
chants of Savannah, Atlanta, Augusta
and Columbus, and Bent an adv••cate to
present tho matter fully to the attention
of tho Governor. Their efforts have re
sulted in tho accomplishment of the ob
ject in view, os it will be seen from the
following order, that the collection of the
tax has been suspended as desired:
Executive Dp’t. State op Georgia, ^
Atlanta, Ga., September 20, 1873.)
To the Honorable the Comptroller General:
Whereas, Petitions numerously signed
by merchants and other citizens of this
State have been received representing
that the special tax of $250 imposed by
the 9th paragraph of tho 2d section of the
act entitled “an act to levy and collect a
tax for the support of the government for
the year 1873, and for other purposes,"
approved February 20, 1873, upon every
individual company or corporation selling
or causing to be sold, by wholesale, any
malt-liquors in this Slate, discriminates
against citizens of this State in favor of
citizens of other States, and operates un
justly upon those engaged in the business
of wholesale dealers in malt liquors in
this State; and
Whereas, It will not injure the public
interest to suspend the collection of said
tax until tho next meeting of the General
Assembly, and believing it proper that
that complaint of the petitioners should
belaid before the Legislature, that the
relief by the nature of tho case may be
granted; it is, therefore
Ordered, That the collection of tho spe
cial tax aforesaid, due the State, be, nnd
the same is hereby suspended until tho
ndxt meeting of tho General Assembly.
It is further ordered that tho Comp
troller General duly notify the Tax Col
lectors of tho State of the above suspen
sion.
Given under my hand and the seal of
the Executive Department at the Capitol
in Atlanta, the day and year above writ
ten. Ja mbs M. Smith, Governor.

Copper niulnir in Georgia-
It sivms highly probably that copper
mining is likely to become an important
interest in Middle Georgia. Some months
ago a company was formed for th
pose of testing the value of the mine on
the piaee of Mr. Win. Tuggle near Union
Point. The company kirgained with Mr.
Tuggle for the place, to pay him so much
for it, on the 20th of September, pro
vided their tests prov«*d the mine to be
of any ©on>ideraWe value. The JOrvicos
of an ex]*crienced Englishman w:is ob-
tnined. and some $0,000 spent in examin
ing the mine. The nmultof the tost was
satiafactoxy, and last week the company |
paid $15,000 in i%sh for one acre of
ground with the privilege of mining two
hundred acres.
The company wdll at oniv put up $75,- ,
