A young Mr. Wilder, ion of Mr. R. C.
V,’ild.tr, fell from the hippodromeyesterday
nft« i a distance of twenty*one feet.
He wax -vervl j hurt by the fall, but for
tunately no bones were broken, aud it is
lxdievod he has *u*toinod no serion* in
juries. Dr. Hall attended him.
The Wrnflirr.
Yesterday was suited to be put down in
the calendar as one of those fine autumnal
days of which the poets sing, and in
which boys delight whenever they desire
to hunt the agile squirrel or the shiny
rbinespin. It was one of those days
when the sun was not too worm nor the
shade too cool—-when a man can be com
fortable anywhere, or could tie if it was
not for the “stringency of the money
market."

J. F. Ru-ficM k Co. have our
thanks fora nice lot of v**ry delicious
grapes. These gentlemen, at their store
on Fourth street, have on hand a great
variety of fruit, including everything t
market affords at this season of the year.
Their stock of grapes, especially, is very
fine, and embraces many of the most de
licious species known. There is no bet
tor or more wholevomo fruit than the
grope, and we are glad to see them be-
reining so abun<lant in this market.
The I*ark.
Work is advancing satisfactorily upon
the fair grounds. The frame of the new
exhibition hall is being rapidly raised)
and when this is once up, it will require
but a short time to board it in.
Some more stock arrived yesterday and
went into quarters at tho park.
Quito a large number of chicken-coops
have hien delivered upon the grounds.
There is every indication that the chicken
show is to bo a most magnificent one. It
is probable that it will bring together a
greater number and more varieties of the
chicken than were ever seen together be
fore in the South.

The high schools, of which Mr. J. H.
Roberts is Principal, had more appli*
turns than could lie accommodated. There
will have to be increased facilities for the
accommoiUtion of pupils in this depart
ment of the public schools, and wo hope
such facilities will be provided at the
mrlieht practicable opportunity.
As soon as the fair is over, we hope to
m>e some activity among those whose
busin«s<s it is to get the public school
buildings ready. It is useless to attempt
a system of public schools that cannot ac
commodate all applicants. There should
be room enough for all.
The vinyor’* court.
There were three parties before His
Honor, the Mayor, yesterday morning.
The first ease called was against Judge
•j. j. Walton, charged with being drunk.
The Judge acknowledged too much of the
eoro and asked to be forgiven “jes this
one time, and I'll never drink any more
in all my life." This was a splendid
promise and in consideration of it. His
Honor fine'! Judge Walton only live dol-
1:ups or ten days on the streets.
t\>r. Dwiloavy had n difficulty with
Nathau Pubs, in the latter’s store on
11 ridge Row, Thursday evening. Ko
struck Hlikes and then made himself
k arce in that neighborhood. The Mayor
thud him ten dollars or thirty days on
the street.
Yountr Africa ill flic Field.
We w.-re i. -t a little amused yestenlay
to observe on the streets a now military
corps, composed of juvenileilarkeys, each
with a staring flower in his cap, and
marching to the music of a cBlspfcfcfsri
tin can for a drum, and the shrill notes
of a capital whistler in lion of fife.
“ March right” was the only order tho
captain «omumnding hud nymtored, and
this was repeated with a frequency
and unction not to be surpassed by a
Georg a militia major. The little fellows
felt their k vpiug, and though somewhat
after the FallstaiHan order in the matter
of shirt tails and breeches really did about
:,s v ll wo opine as their ebony seniors.

Tlic Flojd ltldci.
At the meeting of the Floyd Riff
Thursday night, the unnual election of
©:!i rs came off. Below will be found a
list, which shows that quite a number of
changes have been made:
Thomas Hardeman, Captain.

nvl had been going on be-
deceased, his wife and Don
. h terminated in a fight on
afternoon, for which they were
loned before the Mayor. Don
1 to appear at the City Hall,
i showing made, was fined ten
dollars or thirty days' imprisonment.
D ukos was discharged.
During Friday,’ the quarrel was re
newed, and another fight would have re-
suited but for tbs MnM tt Nfa
man Craig. Last night, during tho ab
sence of Don Levy, Duka* and his wife re
newed the quarrel, and the latter, it is
supposed, must have sent for her son,
be came soon after, and, entering tho
bouse, immediately assaulted Dukes.
Dukes stated that he was an old man,
and begged to be let alooe; but his as
sailant replied that he had bothered his
mother long enough, and with many
curses ordered him to leave the house
After knocking or shoving Dukes down
several times. Don Levy finally ejected
him from the premises, and kicked him
out upon the pavement. Dukes then
rose and again urged Don Levy
to desist. And the latter cursing
him and shaking his fist in his
face, turned to re-enter tho house. In
censed at this, the old man drew a
knife and followed him. Don Levy*s at
tention being called to the fact by the
exclamation of a bystander, ho imme
diately drew a pistol and fired three times
at his antagonist. The first shot missed
Dukes and took effect in tho thigh of Mr.
Werling, who was in no way connected
with tho difficulty. Werling fell, and
Dukes continuing to advance, received
two other shots, one in the thigh and tho
other in the centre of the abdomen, tho
latter bringing him to the ground. Don
Levy then crossed tho street and imme
diately fled in tho direction of tho old
. .-ii:. t. ry.
Dukes was taken into the house and
died in about an hour. Tho other
wounded man was also removed to his
residence near by.
AN UNNATURAL WIFE.
At the time that Don Levy was kicking
an<l beating Mr. Dukes on the outside of
the house, his mother came to tho door,
and told her soon to kill the old scoundrel,
as she could not live for him. She after
wards evinced very littlo feeling or com
punction at the death of her husband.
Dukes ha<l been drinking, and was still
under the influence of liquor. Don Levy
was sober. The latter was known by
sight to many of our citizens as the usher
in Ralston's Hall last winter. He is of
prepossessing appearance. All the par
ties ore old citizens, and somewhat noto
rious as to character.
When the writer reached tho spot ho
found a dense crowd in and about the
house of tho wounded man, and Chief of
Police Carnes and some of his men on the
spot. The deceased breathed but twice
after he entered, and died without a
stmgglo. There was very little external
hemorrhage. Mr. Werling's * wound,
though serious, is not considered dan
gerous.
A Polite Conductor.
The Fort Valley Mirror of the 1st has
the following, which illustrates tho po
liteness of one of tho most courteous con
ductors that run out of Macon, and also
makes a clover hit at tho popular topic of

Tip? venerable Dr. L. Pierce passed
through this place on his was to Colum
bus a few dnys ago, on tho accommoda
tion freight with Jos. Dense as conduc
tor. Jim procured the old gentleman a
pillojv to rest his head on, when the Doc
tor eulogized him by saying ho was the
most urban# conductor on the rood. Jim
replied thusly: “Why, sir! One day
last week I stopped my train at Jones'
Crossing and took on an old lady who
wanted to go to Columbus to sell eleven
She said if I would wait fifteen
minutes she would make out the dozen,
as the old hen was on, and would be ‘all
right’ in a little or no time. I waited as
she directed; tho old hen announced that
IcfMvfits would be paid and tho old lady
made a run on her.

Fertilizing Compound!
This fertilizer is again offered to the
public an its original purity. The stand
ard has been kept up in every respect
and its intrinsic value has again been
demonstrated during the past summer.
It is recommended, because:
“It is permanent in its effects in return
ing to the soil the fertilizing ingredients
taken from it by excessive croppinj
“It gives to cotton the food necessary
to sustain life while fruiting, therefore
what is called rust seldom occurs where
this fertilizer is used.
“It is the’best restorer of worn out
lands known to agricultural chemistry.
“Its effects are immediate in the pro
duction of large returns the first season.
“It is good for all crops, on any soil,
being pure unadulterated plant-food.
“It,is as good as the best, and is the
least expensive of any known good fertil
izer. *
“It is manufactured at the South and
almost entirely of Southern material.
“It utilizes the ammonia found on
every farm which is the most expensive
part of all complete fertilizers."
We subjoin a few of the many certifi
cates in our possession, as to its value,
from well known parties who have used
it, and to whom we would refer.
