Th« Melon Grower* In That lection Are
Troubled With Thieve*, One of

Shot Recently.
Kathleen, July 8.—(Special.)—We have
had good rains for the past two week*,
and while the melon crop has been cut
oft fully 40 per cent., the beet farmera
now think that a fair corn crop will
be made. Cotton doesn't seem to have
suffered much In consequence of tho
long dry spoil.
The melon Kronen along the Hne of
the Georgia. Southern have been troub
led considerably with tramps who would
coftio along and help themselves to the
best melons near the track. In order
to put a atop to the mischief done by
these pedestrian peats. Mr. J. S. Bryan,
who has been troubled so much by their
depredations on 4ds melon field, early
one morning last week slexed his gun,
went out to his melon patch and se<
cretcd himself to nwslt the ar
rival bf tho melon thieves. Ho had
not been waiting long before a negro
tramp made his approach, und after
looking around to see that no ono was
near, began to devcair one of Mr. Bry•
sn's largest melons. When he hail about
half finished eating, he was surprised
to hear the report of a gun wttbln sev
enty-five yards of him, and to feel tho
shot as they entered his pumuially nudo
body. He sprang to his feet and* ran
away, but was pursued and shot at
until all tho umuirtUlm was exhausted.
It Is unnecessary to ray that no more
melons have bean stolen from that
patch.
Kwthloen is tho largest ohlpplng point
on tho Cleorgla Southern between Ma
con and Palntkn. having an urea, of more
than 600 ncriu In melons. < *
All the growers appreciate vpry'muoh
tho effort* made by the management
of this enterprising road tb lid them In
placing their melons in* good markets;
In addition to keeping a man in Cin
cinnati to look after their shipments
to that point, and to see that all grow
ers get prompt and correct returns;
this road reports dally at every station
the number of cars eh!pj>*d during that
day, the places to which they were
•hipped and tho total number of cars
sent to nny place during tho season.

It Is seldom that * "brank Is to be
ecen In the auction robin, but Messrs.
Botheby & Wilkinson have one In view.
Advocates of women's rights may be
disposed to regard lit as a relic of the
very dark ages, fur a "brenk" Is a gag
for scolds. When a gentleman of the
sixteenth century fell a victim to a wo
man's tongue he promptly locked up her
Jaw—literally—In an Iron stall, which
enclosed the head of the wearer, into
whose mouth a ahaip gag was thrust.
This gentle Instrument of correction
tna a short chain attached, suggesting
that the virago having been effectually
silenced, was chained up by her lord
and master.
Tho "brank” appear* to have taken
Its name from tho Dutch word pranghe,
the yoke of a pillory. It was In use In
Scotland, a, well aa In many parts of
England. In the same collection Is s
small leathern powder-flask with a brass
nozzle, which was given by the gover
nor of Newgale to a Mr. Coward, and
subsequently become the property of
Charles Keene. The flask Is Interest

DELICATE SUBJECT DISCUSSED.
From the Central Law Jouriiil.
The Australian Times discusses In an en-
tertatnlng manner the question whether or
talnlrg manner the question whether or
not a young lady who breaks'her leg at
a dance can maintain an action against
her partner on the ground that It was
caused by his clumsiness. The writer
Intimates tho opinion that a man who
asks n girl to dance does not undertake
to return her to her chaperon In as good
order and condition as he' twelves her
—•'act of God and the queen's enemies
excepted”—but that at most his liabilities
are those of a gratuitous bxller not ex
tending. beyond gross negligence. Or.
looking at the caso from another aide,
that there le no Implied warranty on'his
pert that he la rcaeonably fit for the
puri-,-.- for which I himself as
a partner for a dance, os there Is no
sufficient consideration moving from her
to him to support such a warranty. A
further point raised Is whether or not
sho did not voluntarily assume the risk
of his unfitness. The writer adds that
these questions were very fully gone Into
