FRANKFORT, Ky., June 26.—Gover nor Beckham, in response to many requests, today gave out a lengthy statement In reference to his position in th# Breathitt county matter. He said that It was not within his constitu tional power to declare martial law nnd try the accused ny court-martial. He denounced the yellow Journals of tho North and East, and asserted he had done everything possible to imp- press lawlessness-in Breathitt county. Governor Beckham severely arraigns those whom he alleges have been trying to make political capital out of tho Breathitt county murders, saying that had the Republican party shown the came deslro to punish as Democrats h*v4 shown Goebel’s assassins, then that atrocious crime of over three yearn ago would now have been avenged. He w t* suspected of having robbed a wealthy Filipino woman, who occupied a state room on his car, of $3,000 worth of dia mond*. Subsequently. Chief of Police Kohler received a telegram from the Buffalo authorities asking that Bloom bo released. Thl* was done and Bloom said he would return to Buffalo at once and prove his Innocence. HAVRE, Mont., June 2$,—Nearly two hundred Cm* Indians, a majority of the tribe In this state, are taking part In the annual sun dance on the hills near here. For more than a month the red men have been looking for ward to the evert with glad antlclpa- tlon, and now that the great dance has begun Joy Is uncon fined. Clad In their brightest garments, and clean perhaps for the first time In many months, th<- bucks and the mai dens have gathered, as In the days that are gone, to celebrate the coming the new green grass and to show In other ways that they are glad they are alive. WhJIe the Indian girls do not take part In the dance, they form on* of the most Interesting features of the show. Each on# is clad In a blanket colored even more brightly than are the every day blankets of the Crees, and I* adorned with all her Jewelry, which ranges from a brass ring to a hand some gold watch, obtained no one knows where.. The dance will last until the end of the week, when there will be a groat feast. In which roost dog will play a prominent part. The dogs hav# been course of fattening for several weeks and will be served la all the guests. White men and women are allowed to witness the dsn e and the nttendunt ceremonies on paving a fee of twenty- five, cents. In former days the dance was conducted by th# Crees as a reli gious ceremony, but tn these degene rate days lb is run as a money mnklng scheme, under the direction of Little Bear, the chief of the Crees. The sun dance Is known to the Mon tana pioneers under the name of the grass dance, and in the early days It was often marked by bloodshed, espe cially when the reds rould obtain llq- Now they can obtain none, except In rare Instances.
