Kith of the defendants remembered distinctly many persona who were in their home* the night of the Rankin murder and recalled many Incident* that occurred then. Pressed to nunc person* who were present on othsr night*, or to recite Inc'dente th*t oc curred n few day* prior to the mur der. they said thoy were unable to do so. Cross-Examination Ssvsre. The cross-examination of Attorney General Caldwell was severe. It dem onstrated that each witness cbuld re member nothing that happened op any other night save tho one that Rankin was killed. A Mrs. Graney. mother- in-law of Wad Morris, one of the con fessed rider*, swore that her son-In law was In bed In the same room with her n't 10 o’clock on the nfghf of the killing and therefor* could not have i at the mu.der ua he w*y* he was. She could not recall what time he ent to bed on any other ulght since she h-id known him. Flimsy Evidence. Sam Baker awore that Herschel Hogg, another confessed rider, was In bed with him the n’ght of the killing of Itankin. Ida memory as to other night* was vague however, and hi* said he could not remember whether ho talked with the lawyers for the defense last n'ght. Pathetic 8tory of Aged Mother. M. V. Reid, father-in-law of Hud Mottrl*. one of the defendant*, testified to an allh| for him and denied that he told a d'fferent story before the grand Jury. Withered, wrinkled and poorly clad, Morris* mother. 85 years old. In a tired, hopeless voice, swore that her son was at home the night of the murder. Other witnesses swore same and the defense Indicated that It would prove an alibi for each of the eight men. one by one. Leader on Stand. Garrett Johnson, the reputed leader of the rider*, detailed their movements tin* n'ght of the Rankin murder. Johnson swore’the night riders met nt Marsh’s atom to prevent a raid by Ukr county men aa detailed by Frank FChrlnger. Tho sheriff had authorised them to gather for protection. John- denied that any one wna masked that the men gathered there were night rider*. In fact, he hnd never seen n night rider and would not know one If he saw him. Admits Wearing Matk. Arthur (Hoar, ono of the defendants, ndm'tled going masked to ft meeting called to give a whipping to on al leged thief. He declared, however, that the men at the meeting decided not to act and all went home. He denied joining th« night riders or go< Ing on the ride*. Johnston was widely known throughout tho south and many messages of condolence were received by the family yesterday.
