Suitable for any occasion that demands the overcoat, and for any weather that requires a waterproof. t $15.00 to $40.00 The new year will be greeted with a spirit of optimism on the part of business men that has seldom ever prevailed here to such an extent In tlio Past. Last year the tradesman “sot his” from the panic, and this year the farmer took his medicine In the shape of short crops and short prices. Ifow the bubble caused by overtrading and strained credit has fully collapsed, and all lines have found their footing during the past few months and are recovering surely. If rather slowly, on sound, conservative basis. Her diversified Industries and latent natural resources saved Macon the pinch of the panic as experienced In other less fortunate cities and the 111 effecta were of ahorter duration here than elaewhere. Slneo the movement of the cotton crop began In earnest Macon business men have not corn- gained. The bankers report collec tions as unusually good, while with the wholesalers and retailers and all other lines, obligations have been bundled In a satlafactory manner. President Powell, of the Clearing House association, states that sub- atsiitlal industrlea experience no dif ficulty In obtaining necessary finan cial backing. POWELL 8AY8 THAT NOW 18 THE TIME FOR MACON TO STRIKE OUT—WHAT OTHER MERCHANT8 EXPECT. e|| this Is the "psychological moment* -for Macon to strike out In Its fight record-breaking growth during the year 1109. "Right now we will have no trouble lu landing Just what we want with a little co-operation." he said. "We need that tourist hotel, and a fino commercial hotel, and we fjeed that new building being talked by the Chamber of Commerce. I be lieve that you will see them material ise ao quickly that even the most per sistent optimists will be surprised.” The wholesale grocers are well enough pleased with the result of their yea Fa work, and are looking for- ard to something very much better during the year which will be ush ered In tomorrow. Perhaps In a material way this clan* of trade has more greatly benefited by expansion thnn any other during the year 1901. The opening up of the Ocmulgee to navigation has delivered Into the ■hands of Maeon business men a ter ritory of vast Importance—cjntn.nlng more than a hundred thaasanl p*orl« —whlrh has nut beretofo.v been ac cessible to profitable trade from here. The development of this project will add to the prestige of th3 Macon markets. In the opinion of nearly ©Very man Interested, and after the government has done Its share of work on the channel the river will Iwi one of the most potent factors In tne ; state, and an entering wedge that Will open to Mseon many good thing* denied In the past. As.for the growth of the city's pop ulation during the new year, a great deal may be said. The demand for houses Is now really grwb r than the supply. New families are moving in every day. These are cltlsins of a substantial class, and not floato**. Plnns that have been made In many line* mean the employment and im portation of skilled and well paid workers. The Central railway alma will spend 1300,000 hero In tho im provement of Ita terminal facilities In the way of Increased trackage for the distribution and collection of freight. _ considerable amount of money Is also to be spent In additions to »h« already magnificent shop equipment. Rvery dollar spent In Improvement.! will be a factor In bringing about tho Increase In population. It woukl bo a long story that would cover In detail each and every Im provement and addition to the Indus trial and commercial plants that have Macon as their headquarter*: New In dustries are coming from elsewhere, new ones are projected by local cap ital and small ones aro to be enlarged to meet demands. Manufacturers have made great strides In reaching out for new terri tory In all parts of the United States and In other countries. It would be a surprise to Macon to know how tnanv Macon-made articles find their way'Into the foreign market*. It may be safely stated that the beneficial results expected by the hamber of Commerce when. Its suc cessful smoker waa planned are al ready being felt. Everybody la look ing upward and forward, and the gen-, oral opinion Is that this climate wont agree with the pessimist during the was successfully accomplished before he could reach the scene, attracted by the noise Of the breaking glass. The report when the glass was cracked awakened guests of the Plusa Hotel who thought that an explosion had occurred In the house. Among the goods missed were six Tver-Jonh mm pistol*, one Rem'ngtoo shotgun, several hunting knives and a large number of shells. Mr.on police officers were given considerable trou ble by a gang of window smashers last spring, and no precaution will be over looked In an effort to capture the pres ent operators. An interesting story is told of how Marshal White treated tha prisoner, as he treats the majority, and it la as follows: Boarding the train in Macon, he gave the negro u cigar, told him to go back In the negro car and behave himself. Mr. Whitt* going to the first class car. loiter, he -bought the prtaoii^ a lunch. Then* aotne fruit.' There were no man* at’Iea or handcuffs. At Thomson, the officer left -the train to speak to a fr ond. He asked As sistant District Attorney Akerman to go back to the second class car and see how the prisoner was getting along.
