open secret, now, that the combination on
Garfield, In order to defeat Grant, was ar
ranged in this city Monday night by
Blaine and Sherman, Mr. Hayes being
privy thereto and cordially approving it.
Word was passed along the line that Grant
must be beaten, and that tilts combination
was the only way to do it. If the break
had been postponed one ballot it would
have been too late, and.Grant would have
surely won.
Blaine was not in the Senate when the
news of Garfield’s nomination came, biit
half an hour thereafter Jie. appeared at
the door of the cloaK room, calm and
smiling, but vfitli more than liis usual
pallor, which was the only sign of excite
ment lie showed. He was soon sur
rounded by Senators on his side, and
seemed in the best spirits. That stiange,
anxious expression which his face has
shown lately, was gone, and he looked as
little like a defeated candidate as any
man in the Senate. He looked over his
mail, aud Senators from both sides began
to so crowd around him as to 1 -give their
attentions the air of an ovation. . ■
He received them witb-his usnal hearty
greeting aud-in less than half an hour was
on his feet talking with the usual dash on
an amendment to an appropriation bill.
In the House the news came while a
roll-call was in progress, and. most of the
Radicals being in tlie lobby in rear of the
speaker’s chair, they cheered so loudly as
to interrupt the call. Mr. Randall, evi
dently regarding the occasion an excep
tional one, made no effort to suppress the
noise, which was repeated. A motion to
adjourn was then carried at half past two,
and then the Itads let themselves loose
with three more cheers. After adjourn
ment most of the members remained In
their seats and pretty soon the Rads or
ganized a meeting with Gen. Hawley in
the chair, who made a short speech, be
ing followed by old man Kelley, and then
a committee was appointed to telegraph
Garfield their congratulations. Tlie Grant
men looked rather sickly while all this
was going on, and I noticed many of them
“leaked out” before the performance was
over.
CONGRESSIONAL.
Matters are unusually dull and When
tlie appropriation bills are disposed of
there will be a general disposition to get.
away. Tlie most important bills now on
tlie calendar are those regulating the
counting of the electoral vote, and rela
tive to the employment and pay of mar
shals and their deputies at federal elec
tions. Tlie Rails are expected to make a
desperate fight in the House against these
measures, aud if they do it will likely de
lay adjonmment until July. If they do
not, the 15tli inst. yrill probably witness
the final fall of th$ gavel and the rush
homewards, “to fix tneir fences,” of the
honorable members- of the House. If,
however, the Cincinnati convention should
find them still here, it will he ai risky
business betting when the fences will re
ceive proper attention. ' ■ ' '
WE CAN SURELY BEAT IT.
I have met no Democrat here who h as
the least doubt of our ability to beat the
Radical ticket If wC only, show half Sense
and judgment in the selection of ours.
Of course we . can’t win with Tilden.
That is a cold fact that nobody who will
give an honest opinion’dare deny. Who
will be the man, is one of the darkest of
all dark propositions. I think the Field
“l»oom” is just now being worked more
vigorously than any other, hut So was
Blaine’s, and the end of one'ihay very
likely be the end of the other.* One thing,
however, is sure now. The.-. is no possi
ble chance to break the “solid South”
from the Democratic party—always pro
vided Tilden is not the candidate. Grant
might have done it: but Garfield never.

APPALLING CATASTROPHE.
Collision. and Burning of A Sound
Steamer.
Xpw York, June 12.—It Is reported
this morning that the steamers _ Stoning-
ton and Narragansett collided this morn
ing off Cornfield Light, Long Island
Sound, and the Narragansett sunk. Ap
plication at the office of President Bab
cock, of the Stonington line, confirmed
the report, but no information could be
obtained. A private dispatch says a num
ber of lives were lost.
Later.—The steamer Narragansett,
which left J New York last evening for
Stonington, and the Stonington, which
left Stonington for New York, collided off
Connecticut, river about ii:i5. The runn
er took fire and sunk.
Stonington, Conn, Jnne 12.—Steam
er Stonington arrived at 0:40 this morning
with about fifty survivors of the Narragan
sett. The bow of the former struck the
Narragansett three feet aft of the stem,
cutting lier down nearly to the water line.
She struck • the Narragansett at 11:30
o'clock on the starboard side, forward of
her wheel house. The shock burst a gas
tank and in fifteen minutes the Narragan
sett was en fire. She sank in four fathoms
of water. Steamers City of New York
and Providence came to her assistance
and all. the boats and life rafts of the four
steamers' were lowered and put m ser
vice.
Two hours elapsed before the last pas
senger was picked up, most of whom
were transferred to the City of New
York.
The passengers say the officers and
crew of the.-Narragansett ..behaved with
great coolness and nerve.
On her arrival at Stonington the village
was aroused, and men and women has
tened with clothing aud assistance.
Twenty-five women were on board in
tlieir night clothes, one of whom died be
fore reaching here from the shock. She is
not yet identified. One man picked up is
Rev. E. B. Lockwood, of Sixty-eighth
Street Methodist Church, New York. He
was on liis first trip East.
No estimate Can be made of the loss of
life. It is believed to be less than at- first
supposed. ’
Another account aays the surviving pas
sengers from the ill-fated Narragansett
all agree that out of a passenger list of
more than three hundred, a large number
must have been lost, as the water around
the burning steamer was alive with strug
gling people, clinging to rafts and every
conceivable thing.
It is feared that most of tlie passengers
- that were in the berths below the main
deck did not have time to save them
selves.
Later.—Second officer McDonough, of
collision but the boat .capsized and Mrs.
Dix, her nur$e, baby, little boy and girl
clung to the boat but tlie boat turned over
in the same way three times, aud Mrs.
D|x said lier—nurse,-hec~baby_and her
little boy and girl weroyyasli$d away.
She and another lady were the only ones
Ieftrlo the bbat. J’f
After more than an hour they -were
picked up by the officers and men in the
boats from the City of Nev.-Tork, and ta
ken on board of that boat. She wore dia
mond ear TjiigS, and the diamond rings on
her hands tverc Imbedded in the swollen
flesh, and the skin had been torn off her
fingers, hands and wrists by the boat’s
sides and the ropes, 16* which she had
clhng for her life.
As soon as the City of New York ar
rived word was sent to Mr. Dix, in Wall
street, and he rushed to the pier and
found his wife. The meeting of father
and mother who liad lost their entire fam
ily, brought tears to the eyes of every one
In the saloon. Other sutviv’qTS wlio had
not jpet vtfth'so great losses, forgot their
own 1 ’misery for a moment in'sympathiz
ing with the Unfortunate man and wife,
whose children liad been drowned.
The City of New York brought to her
pier in this city about 150 survivors. A
great crowd of anxious friends and reia-
tiyes of the passengers had assembled at
tlie wharf. In the cabin ami saloon, and
on tlie decks of the City of New York,
and the steamboat pier, the scenes were
ofi the most' heart-rending character:
Women who had lost children and hus
bands, weeping bitterly; and men who
had been in tlie water for hours had
scarcely strength enough to sit up. Little
girls and boys were crying and looking
for their parents.
Scarcely a survivor was clad in a com
plete suit of clothes. Men and. women,
young and old, were wrapped iri blankets,
or had oil single articl?s.ot' apparel which
tlieir kind fellow passengers on board the
City of New York, had loaned them.
Now the husband,, who liad learned that
his wife or sister had arrived on the City
of New York, and had been saved,
would arrive, and two sorrowlul persons
would bo united. Then a woman
would rush out of the state room and
closely scrutinize a young hoy who hap
pened to be comingon deck, saying, “Ah!
that looked like my hoy.” Many of the
passengers left the boat soon after its ar
rival, and even clad in blankets, who had
no shoes and no hats, to buy clothing.
Boston, June 12.—According to the
stoiy of Cornelius Henry, of this city,
there must have been a great many lives
lost. He says that at the time tlie Narra-
insett, in which he took’passage from
ew York, left that city, there were be
tween three and four hundred passengers
on hoard; and that at that time all tlie
berths and state rooms were engaged. It
was very foggy, and tlie last ofthc passen
gers hail retired. I think that with the
exception of the officers, I was tlie only
one on the Narragansett that was up and
saw the Stonington when she struck us.
We were running at a pretty fair rate of
speed at the time,as was also the Stoning-
tqn. She struck us amidships ou the star--
hoard side, and raked lip clear to the
wheel. The. force of the collision caused
the Narragansett to list heavily, to
port, and in less than five minutes she
went down as'far as the main deck, aria
grounded.
Shortly after that I saw a sheet of fiame
shoot up anil in less time than I can des-
•cribe it the entire ship was on fire. The
moment I saw what liad happened I rush
ed for the hurricane deck and tried to cast
loose the llferaf t which was there, but was
unsuccessful. I then slid down’a post to
the saloon deck, and tried to cast loose
another life raft, hut wasrxgain unsuccess-
thl.' By this time the fire had gained such
headway I hardly knew what to do., I
saw a life raft floating in the water a short
distance from the steamer, and as it was
say last chance I jumped overboard and
commenced paddling for it. Wlieh a
short distance from the raft, I became pret
ty well exhaHSted, and had it not been
for a line which had been left towing be
hind I would have most assuredly been
drowned..
Mr. Henry gives much credit to the of
ficers of the Stonington and Narragan
sett, for their efforts, and adds a word of
testimony in favor of Narragansett’s pas
sengers. who were, he says, remarkably'
cool under the trying circumstances.

its testimony and says: “The sale of War
