It h$s had such protection, and Itaow has It. I do not find that the government has failed in that respect at all. In stances of disorders have occurred, but- they have been speedily suppressed. I cannot, therefore, attribute to the gov ernment the failure of this corporation to perform Its public duties and deny this application. It followw that a writ of mandamus must Issue. This court upon this application stands between the public and this corporation, and may not swerve from a full declara tion of the law and of the case, or from a full compliance with it That this corporation Is not fultDiing its or dinary corporate duties to tho public Is not denied. It pr sernted the Issue to the court that the reason tor it ts that It is overoome by violence, and toe government does not adequately protect It. This might be a sufficient answer in law. If true, but 1 refuse to find that either the Jurisdictional nr the executive branch of the gov ernment- failed ta affording protection to the corporation. Thtcre Is no evidence before me upon wuich I can cast re proach upon tha state. It was defined in the argument that two other street railroad corporations, in Brooklyn have been all toe while running their cars In tho usual manner. This corporation has the right to get labor as cheaply as It can, but It may not, without a vio lation of law. To this Norton replied that the company ne represented only discharged nu n for dis honesty or drunkonnese or carelessness* He asserted that corporations should have the right ter discharge employes at once, whenever enuse aro • . He further Mid that employe* who obeyed the rules of the company could remain In their em ploy as long as they wished. Ho nakl he fixed the length of the notice that men should give when they Intended to quit af ten days, bocause that period would afford railroads time to till striker's places. He also advocated the enaounent of legislation that would restrain labor leaders from compelling new men to Join their organisation. He declared that mu oomnany now had all the inen that It wanted. He said he was collecting evi dence against men whom he suspectcu of having cut the wires, and when ho .-(•cured this, he would have them.nrres:- ed and prosecuted to the full extent or the law.. The companies made a great stoowing of cars in all part* of the city today. Two or three lines which ran cars yoi terday were idle* owing to the'Wlre cut ting; other new lines were started, on some of them only one car was run. The cars were run later tonight than •iny time since the strike. All were stopped at 10 p. m., however. The city was comparatively rulet snd butbut few disturbances occurred.
