Look in the papers to see who is running for office. Candidate Spencer Atkinson spoke at Isabella Friday. Miss May Jenkins and Miss Ma¬ ry Bloodworth came tobay. You can get a full suit of sum¬ mer clothes at Jeffrey’s for $2. Engineer Hansell got a finger bit off by the engine lever yester¬ day. A large iron screw pin for cot¬ ton press is for sale at this of¬ fice. We hate to lynch anybody, but too much spring poetry not be endured. The colored people will picnic and red bug at Beech Haven to¬ morrow. Mrs. Ililey, of Garden Valley, came last night to visither broth¬ er, Prof. Passmore. Mrs. C. C. Barbre returned last night from a visit to relatives in Georgia. A dozen workmen are engaged on the brick block belonging to W. A. Murray and A. B. Wells. Mrs. I?. R. Hayes takes the Pinnix house today. Mrs. Burke has move into the house with Mrs. Welch. Charlie Hickman and little Teete and Enizie Lay left Mon¬ day night to spend the summer in South Carolina. To sell eigaretts in this town you must pay a tax of $50. News boys on the trains will be notified of this fact. The big barn at Cycloneta burnt down Saturday evening. Four calves and a hog perished in the flam:*. Mrs. W. T. Williams and chil¬ dren have returned to Sycamore from a month’s visit to Macon and Taylor counties. A rope to a limb would keep good time if the man who is do¬ ing so much robbing could be used as a pendulum. The spring meeting of the Meth¬ odist church commenced Wed¬ nesday night and is running with Rev. Flanders and Fain. Servi¬ ces at 4 and 8 p. m. Editor E. A. Nisbett was tried last week for shooting J. H. West- berrv, was convicted and fined $75. The fine was very light. Since the Frenchman left the photograph gallery, it has been closed. We are not informed whether it m ill be re-opened or n() ^* W. W. Hall and O. A. Edwards fr e recent .raduale, of the At- lanta Medical college from Worth, and W. G. Ford graduated in dentistry. The familiar face of Alf was seen at Isabella last week. Hehas not missed a court at Isabella in 40 veaJs. He says he is well pleased with Flor- ida. We vve had naa a a tele-ram reiegram from trom , I 1 . W n . came this morning but too late for publication this week. There was to be a holiness meet- i»g»t Tilton. I hose who atten- ded from here were, M. S. Cantey and his wife, T. .1. Shingler and his wife and «J. K. Burges and Miss Mattie Clark. Col. J. W. Powell was at home with his sick wife last week when the Advance thought lie was at court; hence the apology for say¬ ing Col. Comer was the only le¬ gal light left at home. A card came yesterday morn¬ ing announcing the Worth county Sunday school celebration in Pou- lan today. It is a lamentable fact that the schools of Ashburn have never taken any interest in the county celebration. A tire in Joe Butler’s wood pile by the side track yesterday gave employment to about 50 men for a while. There is about 80 cords of rich, dry wood in that pile, and if they had let it alone it would have made a big fire. There will be a meeting in Ma¬ con today ot the different tele¬ phone companies of South Geor¬ gia to form an independent tele¬ phone exchange for the purpose of connecting all of the towns that will join the enterprise. II. S. Woodard was again the victim of a lick in the eye at the mill Saturday evening. This time he was shaping a piece of iron in a vise when it slipped out and struck him in the eye. This is the fourth time he has an accident with his eyes. Candidates who have their an¬ nouncements published in this paper will be required to pay for them in advance. Of course they are all nice honest men, but a de¬ feated candidate who will cheer¬ fully pay for his announcement is too much of a saint for this vile world. A countryman drove into town yesterday and was just in the act of hitching his horse when the signal whistle at the mill blew for the machinist, stood in amaze¬ ment waiting for the fire compa¬ ny to run by and put out a big fire. He thought it was a fire alarm. The death of the Cordele Herald is due to lack of patronage in its own party. Editor Christopher gave notice three weeks ago that unless his people supported the paper he would look after other business. But his awful mistake was in trying to run a 48-column paper for a 1-column party. A whirlwind as large as a house passed through the center of Asli- burn one day this week going from north-west to south-east. It did no damage, but to watch the movement of these little things gives one an idea how the great cyclones sweep through and tear up the country. In the one re- ferred to scraps of paper and oth- er trash floated 200 feet high. A thrill of terror is experienced when a brassy cough of croup sounds through the house at night. But the terror soon changes Cough to re- lief when One Minute Cure has been administered. Safe and harmless for children.—J. S. Betts & Co. Sycamore complains that she can’t get a marshal that will do his duty. The blind tiger in op- eration there manages to get all of the marshals on its side and then goes ahead. Mr. A. B. Skip- per has been employed there now, and it is hoped that he will assist tj ie town in bringing to justice the evil-doers. * E? lect ing cold. One Minute Cough Cure cures coughs, colas, croup, grippe and all throat, and lung tr0,ibles — ^ Betts * t;o - 1 There is an old black sow in Ashburn that has been of great ! annoyance to farmers. The swine can take a sack of flour out any 1 Luggv and strow it as she runs ! and ami not »*«»«- a pound v of it can he sav- t ,t take home. One day this week a coun- ' try man came to town with a rifle in his buggy, saying if that ani- mat touched his meal there would he a crack shot and a dead hog. Children and adults tortured by burns, scalds, injuries, eczema or s.vin eliseases may secure instant relief by using DeWitt’s Witch Hazel Salve, it is the great Dim remedy.—J. S. Betts & Co. The car-robbing that has been going on in Tifton a year or more will not be so prosperous now as that business has been for a'year or more, as two ot the in the business are in Berrien county jail. About two Weeks ago Robert K. Dixon was enptur- ed at Seville, and last Monday Spencer Porter was landed at Oakfleld by N. Y. l’eavy, and taken to Tifton on the Shoo-tly that night. These two darkies have been robbing cars in Tifton and shipping the goods to Cordele over the same road they were stolen from. Porter says lie did not steal anything, but watched while Dixon stole. Dixon tells about the same tale. We are anxious to do a little good in this world and can think of no pleasanter or better way to do it than by recommending One Menute Cough Cure as a prevent- at.ive of pneumonia, consumption and other serious lung troubles that follow neglected colds.—J. The Fish floated on down to Sycamore and into a box car for rest when the officer pulled him out and sent him back to the gang. Fish and two others were convicted in Wil¬ cox county for petit larceny for four months each. Back of this 4-iuonths-each are three chickens, the property of llev. (). V. Fuller at Abbeville. The men boiled the chickens in a lard can on Tuesday, were tried Wednesday and were sent to the gang on Thursday. Fish says his father is a preacher also. “It's no joke’’ when we say that Dr. Tichenor’s Antiseptic is superior to anything offered to the “dear people” as a dressing for wounds, bites and stings of insects, “poison oak,” etc. It’s cleanliness, pleasant odor and quick cures makes it a universal favorite whereyer known. Price, 50c. Mrs. Bailey’s barn was burnt Tuesday night, and along with that burning would pe a lynch¬ ing if the man who fired it was shown the respect lie needs. A negro boy was sleeping in the barn, and was aroused by the whinny of the horse in the stable, The cause of the whinny was the approach of a man who tip¬ ped up the stairs and struck a match, lifted a bundle of fodder P llt the match under it. J he boy gave the alarm at once, the man ran off and the barn burnt up with 40 bushels of com, 400 bundles of fodder and a lot cf rice straw. Why any man should want to burn any of Mrs. Bailey’s property is not known, The track and other evidencesgatlier- ed tell a tale something like this: Two men went to Sycamore and : took Mr. Lawton’s horse out of the stable aud came to Ashburn. They took Dr. Tison’s , buggy from the shed and harnessed it to the ^ horse, got an ax and a hat from D. T. Page’s porch and put them | «» «» -W Then the, drove : up near Mrs. Bailey’s lot, one of! them left the buggy and fired the tmrii, returned to the buggy and t j ie t vvo started off driving fast through the woods toward public road. Before they got the road they hung the buggy oil a stump and had to leave it. They returned to Sycamore, put up the horse and fed him, ’ and passed * t«:iju , n , „ ... , tat-ion. There the tracks were lost. No clue. The grand jury last week found bids against Mr. Z. T. Ennis and his wife for arson. Their house got burnt a few months ago. in that burning is enough of history to cover several pages of almanac. The Sunday school picnic to bo at Beech Haven Wednesday-week a thing of some mixture. The resolution was passed by the Bap- fist school and a committee ap- pointed to confer with the rail- road for rates and date. Sunday morning when the subject was up u the Baptist school. Prof. Pass- more argued against the date be- cause it was in the middle of the week, lie was hissed down. Since then he has intimated that his pu- j>j] s S ] )0U ] ( ] no t o ( > that day be¬ cause it would interfere too much with his work. Then the Meth¬ odist school claims that it has not been invited to take part with the Baptist school, and was not consulted as to the time. One of the Baptist school says the Meth¬ odist school will he officially in¬ vited next Sunday. Then the Methodist school will feel a little Sore over not being consulted ns to the date and some will not go. years ago the committee ap- puilUcd from each school failed to exactly .. agree on every point, , and . that old worm is still growing in some of their souls. Pursell, of Knit- nersville, Pa., was cured by using a single box of DeWitt’s Witch Ilazel Salve. Skin diseases such eczema, rash, pimples and (disti¬ llate sores are readily cured Gy this famous remedy.—J. S. Betts & Co. The little town of Oakfield, on tin 1 Albany and Northern rail¬ road, was threatened Saturday with a serious clash between its white and black populations. The whites had ordered the immediate departure of several negro women of the most degraded type, under penalty of force, and this incen¬ sed the entire black population. Negro men armed themselves to the teeth and headed by a band they marched through the town declaring that the streets should lie drenched with blood before the order should be obeyed. Their action excited alarm, and the cit¬ izens were equally as determined that their will should be obeyed. Realizing t he gravity of the situ¬ ation the Oakfield authorities called upon Albany and other places for help. Fifty men with Winchester rifles responded and their presence had instant effect tn bringing the blacks to their ' senses. Their mob quickly dis • per.sed and serious trouble uas averted by the timely arrival the unflinching band of white men.—Oo rd el e Se n t i 11 e 1. Whooping cough is the distressing malady; but its dura- tion can be cut short by the use of One Minute Gouge Cure, which is also the best known remedy for crouo and all bronchial troubles,—- J. 8 Betts & Co. PEACE TO ITS ASHES. O’ It was Alvin J’. Roberts instead of Sheriff Roberts, who ordained that the Cordele Herald should longer run. TOOK FRENCH LEAVE. -ti¬ llovelle, t In* French pher. has shaken the dust of Ash- burn otf his feet and gone without a promise to return, llis brief stay here was marked with such a polite 1 failure that he does not care to extend his acquaintance* with the 1 elear people. He says if Ashburn goes to heaven he will be happier in the other place, lie 1 scattered his hand hills ami set u]) for work, but people did not fall over eachother in getting to his gallery, and lie said the peo¬ ple of Ashburn were too religious to have pictures. His expense account van up to more than $30. llis income was only $2. 1,0 packed his grip Tuesday evening and handed us the folllowirg note for publication: “Ad. Hovelle, the artist has left Ashburn. lie wants through this way, to thank the public for; the liberal patronage upon him, while here, (lie made 1 one half dozen cabinets @ $l.f>0.) When in 1900 he visits the Expo¬ sition in Paris, he certainly will recommend the town of Ashburn to his countrymen artists, who want to lay in a supply of wealth and religion. An. IrovKr.r.K." Many old soldiers may feel the effects of the hard service they en¬ dured during the war. Mr. Deo. S. Anderson, of Roseville, York county, Penn., who saw the hord¬ es kind of service at the front, is now troubled with rheumatism, “I lmd a severe attack lately,’’ ho says, “amid procured a bottle of Chamberlain’s Pain Balm. It did j so much good that 1 would like to; Know what, you would charge me for one dozen bojt.les. 1 i Mr. An- derson wanted it both for his own use and (o supply it to his friends and neighbors, as every family should have a bottle of it in their home, not only for rheumatism, but lame back, sprains, swellings 1 cuts, bruises and burns, for which it is unequalled.
