Jeffrey & Roobin will occupy the Hickman store. It is too early to pledge your vote to a candidate. Don’t fail to send the money when you subscribe. The string band just organized has had its picture taken. Lay up a little money each day; limes will not always be good. Your uncle Allen Candler will speak at Isabella next Thursday, Miss Minnie Parker expects to attend Wesleyan commencement. Be it ever so joyful, there is no place like Beech Haven for a pic¬ nic. Men with vulgar tongues are not worthy of respect from decent people. Mrs. T. H. Thrasher will accom¬ pany Miss Nellie home to remain about two months. Condidate who want the sup¬ port of Ashburn should ask for it through Ashburn’s paper. Clerk J. W. Warren and Col. Geo. G. were here Saturday eve¬ ning. Jim is a candidate for clerk again. For the convenience of my country friends I will he at the gallery all deav Saturday.—Mrs. W. T- C. Zeb Fowler is visiting here from Newberry, Fla. Zeb is the youngest of the Fowler boys wh<r used to live here. Now that the picnic and the meeting are over, frying size chickens can go to roost without a fear of being pulled for the pot. Mrs. T. W. White and her son, Col. B. B. White, will visit Macon during the commencement exer¬ cises of Wesleyan Fomale College. If you want a picture enlarged to life size either in crayon or wa¬ ter colors, I can do it for you for lees money than anybody.—Mrs. W. T. C. Col. F. Park and Mr. D. A. Mc- Girt were here Friday from Pou¬ lan looking after the interest of Mr. McGirt’s candidacy for tax receiver. Earnest Gannon misplaced a plug while working about a Boil¬ er Wednesday aud is now in need of semething that is good for a scald. Justice McArthur reports 570 votes in this district; 296 whites and 274 colored. Candidate who slight this paper may be reminded ol this fact when the vote is counted. Tramps going through this coun¬ try are not so worthy of kindness gg some think. If they are able to walk and camp out at night they are certainly able to work. The dry weather is telling Oil the timber steers, and .1, 8. Betts & Oo. have sold 25 oxen to G. W. Jones to be shipped to Tennessee for beef. This was the finest lot of cows ever shipped from this point. They avereaged 1,200 pounds apiece, and only 21 of them could he put in a car. The price paid was $24 apiece, How often have you heard peo¬ ple say, “Oil, I would give any¬ thing bn earth for a picture of my dead mother, father or baby!” Not long ago a lady called and while talking about her neglect in not having her baby’s picture taken wept bitter tears of grief. Why neglect this important mat¬ ter ?—Mrs. W. T. C. Of all the posibilitios to build up a high school for Ashburn, the best seems to be the employment of Prof. Thrasher of Oconee conn- ty, a nephew of our Dr. Thrasher. He is a graduate from Emerv, and has made an excellent record as a teacher. H ? is a religious gentle- man of high standing, and would doubtless do Ashburn excellent service. The interest of the school should be closely guarded just at tlfrs season. A man shabbily dressed, wear- ing rough beard and shaggy hair, walked into a store here the oth¬ er day and called for “a little hit of coff'ee and a little tobacco.” The poor fellow looked like lie could not pay for much of either, and he did not get enough of that to last him long. Next fall when he goes to pay for them he will complain at the low price of cot¬ ton and say the farmer is a down¬ trodden race. Coffee and tobac¬ co are not necessities, but some men will keep their children out of school for the sake of their cof¬ fee and tobacco. The extremists in sanctification are not subscribers to this paper, but they can find a bone in it to gtlaw occasionally and then they htiddle together and say the Ad¬ vance is fighting the church of Cllirist. No, children, no! If you would subscribe you could read j the paper with a clear conscience , and better understand its mean-1 i ing. . „ Borrowed , papers are always , hard to understand. In the lan- guage of Sam Jone, some of them yelped last week because the Ad- vance rejoiced at the return of some of them to the old time re-: ligion. We don’t oppose sanctifi- j cation, but the methods of some of the tin horns who have not got it. Let us come gather. If we meet and ona ticket, 1 will support it j whether I like it or not. We know of no candidate from this district, but let’s vote together and try to distribute the offices well over the county. Harmony will not hurt us. Shall we have such a meeting? The shock it received by those who tried to run it into the Wesleyan faith has about been overcome by the help of John 0. Flanders and his back bone. Since the middle of January 48 members have been received—84 by confession and 14 by letter This is the best record the church has made in several years, AH praise to Preacher Flanders. Rev. Shirah organized a band of Christian workers which obli¬ gated each member to pray in public or talk in church when called on. 85 joined the band. The entire day devoted to singing, with one hour's intermission for Nearly everybody joined in song service, but, of course it ( understood that a great many young people found interest in other things. Shady nooks and sequestered spots beside streams seemed unusually invit- ing, and these attracted many ad- mirers. Such a barbecue dinner as was spread could not have been excelled. There were meats bread coff'ee and other apetizing viands in plenty, and the partakers agree that the food was temptingly well prepared. Answer W Uilo tomatoes will grow and produce abundantly on any medium soil, there is one essential to their sue cessful cultivation, and that is very thorough preparation. If the land is Muksoilnd so much the better, and it ■bould then be harrowed and rehar¬ rowed until not a lump remains. It is not ueeessary to broad east the manure if a complete eomiuereial fertilizer, with a preponderance of potash and phos- phoric acid, is used. Use a handful of this, a handful of wood ashes and a tablespoonful of nitrate of soda to each plant, being careful to mix thoroughly with the soil, and to prevent any of these ingredients touching tbo plant. After the plants are set, that, is in two or threo days, give them a thorough working with the harrow, or cultivator, aud, of course, the weeds are to be kept down throughout the growing season. When the fruit begins to set repeat the application of fertilizer. By this plan the plants are strong and stocky and the fruit abundant and evenly developed. Stable manure may bo used, but it should !>e thoroughly decomposed, made fino and mixed with the soil. If the pluuts nre troubled with insect enemies they should be sprayed according to the directions we have frequently given.-— Stuto Agricultural Department.
