It i» strange why people who prole-" to be Christians look at the trutii like a house eat would look at a w;olf. Two weeks ago a tent meeting was going on here and this paper gave an account, of it as honestly as it. would give an account of a circus. But my, my, they turned their feathers up like a nettle and rebuked ‘‘the editor in their Holy Ghost way by pray¬ ing on the hilltop for an abun¬ dance of special blessings in biB behalf. The Lord is continually blessing us. but we have not re¬ any more blessings than usual, and we don’t believe they put any faith in it. But they made the racket and that is what they were here for. They denied being here for money, but more than §75 was made up for them Sunday night and they took it without a murmer. We did not oppose them, but gave only the news of the day, being here for that purpose “Truth is mighty and will prevail.” Every where j higher aspirations ought to have j the right of way. They wanted ‘a bone to gnaw, and they seized this paper as usual and went at it. If they can’t stand to look the truth in the face, they had better seak the Lord. They had been told of us. Oh! yes, look out for Smith, his pen has given us a tot of worry. If we told half of how some of the profess ri baffle with God, they would have a bone large enough to furnish them gnawing substance the rest of their lives. Those who are pleased to call our article ‘‘criti¬ cism” are invited to point out a single sentence uttered by this paper that cannot be proven. We defy the universe. This paper is as honest in giving the news as their pulpit is in preaching. We look upon them as being good people, but some of them are lack¬ ing- in judgement. A TRAMP’S ELOQUENT LEC¬ TURE. A tramp once asked for a free drink in saloon. The request was granted and when in the act of drinking the proffered beverage, one of the yong men present ex¬ claimed, t < Stop, make 11 s a speech. It a poor 1 liquor 1 that uoesil t Illlloos- en a man’s tongue.” The tramp hastily swallowed down the drink, and as the rich liquour coursed through his blood he straightened himself and stood before them with a grace & and dignity that all his rags and dirt . could not obscure. “Gentlemen, he said “I look to- night at you, and myaelf, and it seems to me I look upon the pic- ture of my lost manhood. This bloated face w as once as young and handsome as yours. This shambling- figure once walked as proudly as yours, a man in the world of men. I too, once had a home and firiends and position. 1 had a wife, as beautiful as an artist’s dream, and I dropped the priceless pearl of her honor and respect in the wine cup and, Cleo - patra like, saw it. dissolve and quaffed it down in the brimming draugnt. I had children as sweet and lovely as the flowers of spring, and saw them fade and die under the blighting curse of a drunken father. I had a home when; love lit. the flame upon the altar, and ministered before it, ami 1 put out the holy fire and darkness and devolution reigned in its stead. I had aspirations and ambitions that soared as high as the morning star and bruised their beautiful wings, and at last strangled them that 1 might be tortured with their cries j no more. Today I am a husband without a wife, a father without a child, a tramp with no home to call liis own, a man in whom every good impulse is dead. And all swallowed up in the maelstrom of drink.” The tramp ceased speaking. The glass fell from his nerveless fingers and shivered into a thou¬ sand fragments 011 the floor. The swinging doors pushed open and shut again, and when the uttie group about the bar looked up leans^Syune 5 M o M egg =S35j %!!! ®!tite i . ■ /,i ' L mM o« * i ■ an 11 Ml ■ JSi m — - -~a» rr-r— •or*- ' f„ « ' Sl st aggs 6 J. f>.
