HONEY FROM HEAVEN.
Ancient Ildea That Bee Food Was of
Celestial Origin.
In these days of scientific bee cul
ture, when bees are trained to pack
their honey in pound boxes ready for
market and are as much under con
trol of the beemaster as sheep are of
their shepherd, it is difficult to realize
what quaint delusions prevailed .only
a few centuries back in everything
relating to the hive and its inhabi
tants, says the Chicago News. The
sources and composition of honey
were subjects for many ingenious
speculations. One old writer affirms
it to be “made of the ayre, most of
11 at the rising of the starres, chiefly
> dogge shining out early in the
rning,” although he admits himseX
doubt as to “whether it be the
te of the heavens or a certain
~f the starres or a juyce that
purgeth from himselfe.”
_uef in the celestial origin /of
_aey runs ghrough all the old treac
ises on ag?culaure from the time of
Virgil drovfnward. It was supposed
to be a kind'of manna from heaven,
and its quality depended greatly on
the favorable or unfavorable juxta
position of the stars at the time of
its rescent.
Although the existence in each
hive of one bee much larger than all
the others was generally recognized
in olden times, this was believed to be
mersly a ruler or king over the rest.
That the large bee was actually the
mother of the whole colony never
seems to have occurred to any one
until recent times, This king bee is
very fancifully described as having
“a lofty pace and countenance ex
pressing majesty, and a white spot in
his forehead glistening like a dia
“dem.” In each hive also there were
“subordinate governors, and leaders,
and captains, and colonels, marked by
crests, tufts, or tassels on their heads,
some yellow, some murrey.” Among
various other duties it was the Kking’s
part to go out each evening in search
of any hees that had not returned to
the bhive by sunset and to show them
the way home.
From the earliest times honey -ap
pears to have been held in extraordi
nar'y favor as a universal specific for
human ills. As a hair restorer, it
was largely recommended, rubbed in
plentifully night and morning, and if
dead bees were dried, pounded and
worked up into a thick paste with the
honey its hair producing capabilities
were much enhanced. This mess had
to be plastered on the bald places of
the head overnight, with infallible re
sults in the morning, if one may
credit a certain fifteenth century
writer. For weak eyes the same au
thority says to take a handful of the
heads of bees, bur them and mingle
the ashes with honey gathered in the
dog days. The eyes were then an
nointed liberally with the mixture and
clearness of vision was the invariable
reward.
In old days the situation of a bee
hive was a matter of prime import
ance. It was to be placed always on
the south side of a stream of water
and never in a place where there
were echoes, as an echo was very in
jurious to bees. A little gravel was to
be put down in the neighborhood of
the hives, as in windy weather the
bees needed small stones to carry
about in their flight as counterpoises.
The beekeeper was recommended to
shave and keep his head close-crop
ped, long hair on head or face being
extremely offensive to his charges,
and in attire he was to avoid any
thing of a red color, as this was det
rimental to the bees.

JAPS DISCOVERED AMERICA.
Tradition That Monument of Bull and
Egg Commemorates Achievement.
The history of Japan, like that of
many other nations, shows that
America was known to the ancients
in all parts of the world. As soon as
the art of marine navigation was rs
vived emong the Japanese they cross
ed the Pacific in order to test the
truth of old traditions, and landed in
Mexico not long after Columbus made
his discoveries.
Thase old traditions, says the Kan
sas City Journal, have been from time
immemorial kept alive by a service of
ceremonies unto this day, and it is
unnecessary .to say that no evidence
of ancient events is so strong as fes
tivals and ceremonies instituted to
presserve their remembrance.
The traditional history of Japan in
this matter i 3 a counterpart of that
of Greece and other Mediterranean
nations, and makes reference to a lost
or sunken island.
In Kaempfer's great work on Japan
this story is given:
“Maurigasima was an island in the
Pacific Ocean, famous for porcelain
vessels. The inhabitants were rich
and luxurious and had a contempt for
religion. The King was named Pei
roun. He himself was religious. He
had a dream of a coming flood. It
was to happen when the two faces
of the idols in the temple turned red.
The two idols were called Infoniwoo
and Awun—gods of generation and
destruction. Some one, to play a trick,
one night painted the faces of these
idols red. The King, hearing of the
change of color, lost not time in get
ting aboard a ship. Then the islaad
sunk, and all were drowned exe¢ept
Peiroun. He got safe to China.”
But the enumecration of traditions
found among the Japanese which
point to an early knowledge if not
colonization of America does not rest
upon this incident alone. In one of
the pagocdas is a remarkable monu
ment, whi<¢re the bull of agriculture
is portrayed in the act of ripping up
an egg. Now among mythologists
North America s called the egg of
thc world; and 30 the Japanese sa
vants explain this monument as the
emblem of the ancient discovery and,
colonization of the continent by
Japan. /
The Japanese Columbus and hero of
the first trip across the Pacific was
Jebis. He has since been deified,
made the brother of god Tenzio, and
called the Neptune of Japan. ]
