RE V SAME Prof. TIM E WM. undoubtedly be filled by Democrats, while those of the Seitators from Col- orado, Iowa, Kansas, New Hamp- shire and Vermont will be occupied by Republicans, leaving the sticces- sion in Connecticut, Indiana, New York, Oregon, Illinois, Nevada, Pehn- Sylvania and Wisconsin a disputed question, with the chances in favor of the Democrats in the first four States and tha Republicans in the others. Fifty one Senators hold over, of which twenty-eight are Democrats, twenty-two Republicans and one In- dependent, David Davis. The Senate would then be composed of forty-four Democrats, thirty-one Republicans one Independent, giving the former a majority of twelve, and seven votes shegh of a two-thirds majority. SENATOR David Davis is a "bigger old grant." It takes two tailors, one book-keeper and a sheet of foolscap paper to take his measure man than for a coat. A COLORED man who was lately re- suscitated from what seemed death, but was only catalepsy, was entertain- ing his friends with the sights he be- held in the other world. East Tennessee, lives Mrs. Ann Hop- kins whose age is 117 years. Her hus- band died about 20 years ago aged 109. Living she three sons, George, aged 98; Abner, aged 95; Enoch the baby, aged 90. Mrs. Hopkins enjoys excellent health, and gives promise of many years of life yet. A contract has been entered into between Ex-Gov. Brown and and the State. The former has agreed to pay the latter $500,000 in yearly install- ments of $25,000 for the use of the convicts fortwenty years, from April, 1879. RICH FIR MS IN GEORGIA. The Monroe Advertiser enumerates and rates the rich firms in Georgia as follows; Phinzy & Co., Augusta, over one million : Weed & Cornwell Savannah and John White, Athens, half million each; Berry So Co., Rome: Moore, Marsh & Co., Frank & Co., and Tilson & Gordon, Savannah, four hundred thousand each; A. Anstell; Cox & Trill; Wm. Markham, and Richard Peters, Atlanta: Waxelbaum & Bro., Macon, and A. P. Wright & Co-, Thomasville, a quarter of a million each. There are a number of hun- dried thousand dollar houses. Butas we dont associate with, or have any transactions with these small firms their names are committed. The fact ofit is, a newspaper man cannot afford to lower himself to a pitiful hundred thousand dollar standard.
