3,1881. The eleven States of Calitor
nia, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan,
Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio
(in place of Thurman), Rhode Island,
1ermont, and Wisconsin will certain-
return Republican Senators. The
nine States of Delaware, Florida,
Maryland, Mississippi, (in place ef
Bruce), Missouri, Tennessee, Texas
Virginia and West Virginia will cer-
thinly return Democratic Senators.
Twenty-five new Senators are thus
accounted for, with a gain of one on
each side, leaving the relative situs-
tion of the two parties unchanged.-
The remaining five seats are now fill-
ed by Messrs. Eason of Connecticut,
MIeDonald of Indiana, Kernan of N.
York, Randolph of New Jersey, and
Wallace of Pennsylvania. The Re-
publicans have the present Legisla-
tures of Connecticut, New York, New
Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The Dem-
ocrats have that of Indiana. In the
elections to be held in these States
the probability is that each party will
hold its own. Inothat case, the new
Senate would stand thirty-eight Dem-
ocrats, thirty-seven Republicans, and
one Independent. Should the Repub-
licans carry Indiana, the two parties
change places, and the Republicans
would have thirty-eight votes, the
Democrats thirty-seven votes, with
one Independent, who, by voting
with the Democrats, would give the
new Vice-President the casting vote,
and, transform his negative functions
into a controlling power in the legis-
lation of that body.
