The tree has borne his name since the WRIT The nearest of the giants is nanted. "Andy Johnson."— The guide told Grant a story of Judge Jackson of Georgia, who a few years ago visited the trees. Having spread his cloth under Gen. Grant, Judge Jackson had put the first morsel in his mouth when some one happened to mention the name of the tree. The unreconstructed Judge at once arose, took up his dishes, his (loth and his basket and moved over to Andy John- son, in the shadow of which he dined. The idea of saving all the ex pense of packing, tolling, hauling, loss in weight, freight, commission, tare, insurance, storage, stealing and various other little items from the time it leaves the patch until it re turns from New England, with the jobbers and middle men’s profits all tackled on, is sufficient to create some excitement. Any sensible man can see at a glance the advantages to be gained by this contrivance, and will avail himself of its benefits rather than borrow money at 8 per cent, when he saves 25 by its advantages over all competition from abroad. In less than twelve month's there will be not only one in operation in this city, but several in the county, no doubt. Our townsman Major Finger, made a trip to examine into the merits of one in operation in South Carolina, and re turned fuly convinced that it was the best investment that could be made, and he ia a practical man who does not enthuse over trifles." The largest cotton crop gathered in Texas in one year, before the war, was 200,000 bales. The crop this year will reach one million bales, and the increase is due to white labor, as the emigration to that State since the war has not included any negroes. The total cotton crop of this is estimated at 5,000,000 bales, and it is claimed that more than half of it is the pro duction of white labor. Let’s see now far they miss the mark. We have still about fitly mercantile establisments—most of them first-class, and filled to almost overflowing with all kinds of goods. In addition to these we still have in operation two large warehouses, one rock and the other brick. The finest buildings of the city were not even scorched. It is true that the fire burned out quite a gap in the busi ness portion of the city, but a strang er coming in would hardly discover it unless the burnt district was spec ially pointed out to him. One large brick warehouse and two fine brick buildings lack a great deal of being “nearly all the business portion of Hawkinsville.” Pull down your sights, gentlemen, and “neither pre varicate nor exaggerate." Hanged if we can stand fire and everything elite too. HIGHEST HONORS: Centennial World’s Fair, 18761 SHONINGER ORGANS BEST INSTRUMENTS.
