Cuban Brutalities.
Just by the way of illustration of the insults
and oppression, to which the best Creoles in Cuba
i have to submit, let me tell you (says a Havana,
letter) a story of what took place here a week
or two ago. A party of boys, all under the age
of fourteen, had assembled and locked them
selves tip in a house upon the Cero, to play at
cards, and this house, it. must be remembered,
was the home of one of the boys. The day po
lice having been in some way informed of the
meeting, went with very laudable haste to the
spot, and, finding the door fastened, broke it in
crying at the same time ‘'Conspiracy, Fillibus
j ters!” Ac. The boys had, upon the first alarm,
j disposed of the cards, arid now attempted to es
; cape. One of them, who succeeded in getting
I out of the house, was pursued by a policeman,
| who, upon coming up with him, split his head
j with his sword from the top of the skull to liis
j chin. He was brought before the Commissary
i for this brutal murder, but as soon as that offi
{ cial ascertained the father of the ch Id was a cre
ole, he very summar lv dismissed the case with
out futlu-r not ce. The street officer was return
ed to his original beat in front, of the house men
tioned ; and when it was remonstrated to the
Commissary against this insult to a father’s
i feelings, the only reply was—“ Caramba! he is
j a Creole.’’

The damage to the wire suspension bridge !
over the Mississippi at St. Paul on the night of:
the 22d ult. was S7OOO. Three fourths of the
! bridge fell.
“The crash was awful, equal to the thunder
ing of heavy guns. The anchors that were at
j tached to the bridge gave way a few moments
before the centre of the beafatiful structure came
down. Those anchors on the southwest corueri
planted on the hill back of Col. Stephens’ resi
dence, gave way first. It was feared that the
towers would fall, but they stood nobly. It is
perlmps fortunate that the accident took place
as it did, although another storm of equal se
verity may not occur for years to come. Wc

to hold the bridge. The towers and cables arc
