Goodrich, of Augusta, was in Sylvania Wednesday. Mr. T. A. Newsome, of Camer on, was in Sylvania Tuesday. Mr. L. S, Kittrell paid Sanders ville a short visit last Sunday Mrs. B. S. Waters, of Savannah, is visiting relatives in our town. Mrs. J. H. Evans, of Therissa, is visiting relatives in . Q, dvania this week. Mrs. E. P. Kittles, of Savannah, spent a day or two of this week in Sylvania. Col. Josiah Holland, of Milieu, was in Sylvania Wednesday of this week. Mr. Oliver Parker, of Rocky Ford, visited friends in Sylvania last Sunday. Mr. M. S. Joyner, of Woodcliff, is now with the Daniel Sons – Palmer Co., at Milieu Don’t forget to call in and straighten up with the Telephone when you come to Superior court. Misses Mamie Lane and Daisy Donaldson, of Blitch, Ga,, are vis iting Mrs. J. M. Mills in Sylvania this week. Rev. Loy Warwick is in Guy ton this week, assisting in the re vival services in the Methodist church at that place. Rev. W. E. Dougherty, will fill liis regular appointments at the Christian church in Sylvania next Sunday morning and evening. Rev. Mr. Perkins, of the Presby terian church, will preach in Syl- iu vania next Sunday. All are vited to come out and hear him. You can get the Atlanta Geor gian, daily, and the Telephone, until Jauuary 1st, next, for $2.76. The time on this proposition will be out May 15th. We regret to learn that Ray Lariscy. son of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Lariscy, had the misfortune to break his arm a few days ago. We trust the little fellow will soon be all right again. Mr. Arthur Burke, agent at Rocky Ford, has sent the Telephone one of the Seaboard Air Line It. R. Jamestown Exposition folders, which is an interesting and artistic production. These folders can be secured by applying to Mr. Burke. The town council of Sylvania have decided to put a five dollar tax on all dogs in the limits of the town. This is assessing dogs pret ty high, and will probably dimin ish their number. Mrs. A. E. Burns, of Sylvania, brought the Telephone this week a sample of white dewberries from her patch. They ripen quite early, and are said to be superior to the black variety. One of the questions now agi tating Sylvania folks is whether we want waterworks and a sewer age system, or not. Some say we can’t do it, while others say we conduit, you know. The mandamus proceeding in the Sylvania – Girard Railroad case will be heard tomorrow before Judge Rawlings at Sandersville. Judge S. B. Adams, of Savannah, and Hon. E. K. Overstreet, will represent the present board of di rectors. The petitioners will be represented by Hon. Joe Hill Hall, of Macon. The potato bugs are very bad this year. This pest is said to have taken up its abode here since the introduction of the red Irish potato, a few years ago. It is known as the Colorado beetle, and what they can do for a row of Irish potatoes is a plenty, The best remedy is to pick them off every morning and destroy them. This, however is somewhat te dious, and it is said that a half tea spoonful nt Paris Green mixed with a gallon of water and lightly kill sprinkled over the vines will them. The dose may have to be repeated. They should be destroy ed, for, if not, they will attack other vegetables. Panama Canal-Erie Canal. Machinery is digging the quicker Pana ma canal a thousanc times than the shovel dug he Erie. Machinery produces the L. – M. paint at 50 times less cost for la bor, than if made by hand. HILL BROTHERS. Social News. On last Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Mock entertained the_ boys and girls, who took part in the entertainment given by Misses Hardy and Hamrick, at a candy pulling, complimentary of the splendid success they achiev ed and deservedly merited. The large hospitable home was thrown open aud peals of laughter and delight filled house and yard as stealing they indulged in Virginia reel, partners and other old fashioned games suggested by a candy pulling. Needless to say it was thoroughly enjoyed by all from chaperones to the youngest present. Mr. and Mrs. Mock proved them- and selves most charming as host hostess. Mr. and Mrs. T. V. Robbins en tertained the young lady teachers and a few others from Saturday to Sunday evening at their lovely home, in the suburbs of Sylvauia, the past week. Nothing was left undone for their pleasure, Mr. and Mrs. Rob bins being endowed with an art of entertaining few possess. The guests who enjoyed their charming hospitality included Misses Byrd Hardy, Elizabeth Wyche, Alva Ellis, Lottie Lanier, Sarah Hamrick and Mrs. Ollie Fields. Goloid Wins Initial Game. Goloid played her initial game of ball of the season last Friday afternoon with a fast team repre senting Sylvania. The game was fast and furious throughout, the excitement was at the highest tension.. The home team managed at all stages of the game to keep a lead and come out with the big end of the score, which was 5 to 3. The features of the game was the magnificent pitching of Rob bins for Goloid—striking out elev en of the opposing batters—also a great throw of Robt. Lovett’s from deep left to first base. The Goloid boys having an in satiable appetite for victory, hiked to Dover Saturday afternoon for a game, and succeeded in banding the Dover boys a lemon, the score being eight to ten m this game. On Friday, May 3rd, Mr. and Mrs. N. W Lanier celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their mar riage, at their hdme in this county. A large numberofchildren, grand children, great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends were present—about one hundred in all, and the day was most happily and pleasantly spent. A sumptu ous dinner was spread for the guests at midday, and some touch ing and appropriate remarks were made by Rev. II. J. Arnett. Prayer was also offered by Rev. Lou Over street, A number of handsome presents were received by this be loved couple, who have been walk ing so long and so happily All together along life’s path. left feeling that it was good to have been there and breathing a prayer that many years may yet be granted to this venerable couple. Mr. and Mrs. Lanier have been living ever since their marriage in sight of the place where they now reside, and this gathering of the loved ones in the tranquil evening of their lives there upon the scene of all their early hopes and struggles, was, in deed, a happy and inspiring event. Burglaries at Oliver. Oliver was last night, the 5th inst., visited Oliver by “safe-crackers.’ 1 The safe of the Trading Co., Avas blown to pieces, and an at tempt to blow the safe of the Oli ver Supply Co. proved a failure. They secured something like $35 in cash and about $75 in checks, mainly on the Peoples Bank of this place. This morning about 9 o’clock, Richard Blunt, our colored butch er, who lives near Halcyondale, was coming to town on the side of the railroad, and noticed a bill box and some papers on it, but did not think anything of it until he got to town and beard of the safe blowing. When he told what lie had seen, some men of the village went back with him and the bill box and papers proved to be the checks and box of the Oliver Trading Co., but the cash has not been found. They are putting a detective on same. Dr. A. B. Lanier’s drug store was also plundered, but nothing of great value was taken. J. C. T.
