A Remedy for Divorces.
Sail Jose Herald.
Marry in your own religion,
Never botli be angrv at once.
: Never taunt with a past mistake-
Let a kiss be the prelude of a re
buke.
Let self abnegation be the great
est earthly blessing.
“I forgot" is never an accepta
ble excuso. j
If you must criticise 1 et it he done
lovingly,
Make marriage a matter of moral
judgement.
Marry into a family which you
have long known.
Never make a remark at the ex
pense of the other.'
Never talk at one another, cither
slone or in company.
Give your warmest sympathy for
each other's trials.
If one is angry, let the other part
the lips only for a kiss.
Neglect the whole world besides
rather than one another.
The very lelicity is in tho mutual
cultivation of usefulness.
Never speak loud to one another
unless the house is on lire,
Let each strive to yield oftenest
to the wishes of the other.
Always leave home with loving
words, for they may bo the last.
Marry into different blood and
temperament from your own.
Never deceive, for the heart once
misled can never trust again.
It is the mother who molds the
character and fixes tho destiny of
the child.
Never find fault unless it is per
fectly certain a fault hasjbeon com
mitted.
Do nut herald tho sacrifices yes
make for each other's tastes, habits
and prefemic is.
Let all your mutual accommoda
tions be spontaneous, whole-souled
and free as air.
A hesitating or glum yielding to
the wishes of the other always grates
upon a loving heart.
They who marry for physical
characteristics or eternal considera
tions will fail ol happiness.
Consult one another in all that
copies within tho experience, o' -
servation and Sphere of tho other.
Never reflect on a past action
which was done with a good mo
tive and with the best judgment at
the time.
The beautiful in heart is a mill,
ion times of more avail, as secur
ing domestic happiness, than the
beautiful in person.
‘Stonewall” Jackaons’s Sto
lidity-
The Rev Dr Ilillun, of Ureen
ville, >S C,, lias been billing lor
years souv good things about his
old teacher, Gen ‘‘Stonewall” Jack,
son. W have one of his stories in
The Tribune of Thursday, and
hero is another good one from his
recent article in the Index and
IJ ijilist:
Though I drilled under him for
some three years, and recited to
him every day for a year and a hull,
I never saw him laugh outright,
A vcry quiet, subdued sort of smile
was the nearest thing to laughter
that I ever suw him indulge in;
and these smiles were very infn -
qiient, and generally occurred when
uncommonly ludicrous things took
lilacs in his immediate presence.
If Davidson Penn put on an un
ci .it monly serious face, and asked,
(apparently in good faith], Major,
can a cannon he so bent as to make
it shoot around a corner ? the Prof,
of artillery would not show the
slightest sign of merriment or im
patience, but would, after a mo
ment of apparently sober reflection,
reply, Mr Penn, I reckon hardly.
We could never decide whether hi3
graviiy on such occasions was real
or assumed, t often wondered
how Jackson managed to preserve
his grav.ty.

An Editor’s Dream.
The editor fell asleep after a
time, and lo ! ho dreamed a dream.
And it seemed to him that, having
armed himself with certain papers
and books, he turned his steps once
more to heaven and at
the gate.
‘Hello ! is that you again !
What do you wish ?‘ su'd l'etur.
‘Lot those persons again come
fort h,‘ replied the editor, and j Pe
ter made them all pass through the
gate and stand outside.
They came ns before and uttered
tho same cries ns before.
‘Why didn't yon notice the big
egg I sent you ?‘ yelled the first.
‘lt was rotten, 1 replied tho other.
‘Why didn't you write up my so
da fountain ?• said the druggist.
‘Yon had your tickets printed at
another office, 1 calmly replied the
local man.
‘Why did you write about old
Tomlinson's hens, and never speak
of my new gate T shouted tho
third.
‘Old Tomlinson paid for his ad
vertisement and you didn't. Here's
the hill, 1 said tho editor.
‘Why did you spell my name
wrong in the programme?' groaned
the local talent.
Take a look at your manuscript
and sec for yourself, 1 replied the
editor with a grim smiio.
The lest of tho company yelled
out their complaints in unison, and
the editor calmly sorted out a pile
of bills for unpaid subscriptions
and presented each with one-—and
it was so when they received tlum
they all tore their hair nnd rushed
violently down a steep place lo the
son; and St. Peter, taking tho edi
tor calmly by tho hand, Jet him
within the gate - , and said:
‘Come,friend —tlieso chaps mana
ged to slip through here in spile
of us, but thanks to the press, we
know now what sort of fellows they
are. Come in and stay, we need a
low such men as you iu here.*

Representative Emory Speer, re
plying to the questions asked by
tho Philailelplqd Amtrioau of II -p
--resontative Southern men as to the
condition of affairs and public sen
timent in the South, says:
‘The need of the South is diver
sified industries. Tho protective
tariff is ostensibly to encourage
American industries, and yet, here
is tho great American industry of
cotton manufacturing at the South
paralyzed, in a measure, because a
prohibitory duty will not permit n
Southern man, who desires to oiih
bark his capitot in cotton manufac
turing, to buy his machinery where
he can get it at its true market val
ue The. import tax on cotton ma
chinery is virtually prohibitory.
The purchaser can buy the machin
ery in England for half tho price
that he is compelled to pay for it in
tins country, and here, therefore is
l lie spectacle of gteal industry cap
able of the most perfect and won*
durlul success in ion St-tos ol the
Union, which must languish that
the American Manufacturer of im
plements m.iy flourish. This is uoi
protection to American industry,
aud yet measures that tend to tho
repeal of this tax have had no hear'
ing before a Democratic Congress,
with its party majority, as I have
said, from the States which would

Sunshine at Midnight-
The spectacle of tho sun shining
at luidnighi attracts many foreign
ers in Swedish Lapland during the
month of June, For six weeks
there is scarcely auy night iu tha
North of Sweden—the sun never
sets, and the soil, constantly heated,
produces in a month uui a half
barley aud other Ci ps. At (uat
time of yoar the Laplanders pen up
there reindeers and move their
hills towards the cultivated field*.
Demg very hospitable, they greet
with joy the arrival of tourists, who
generally meet at Mount Gellaware,
about ninety miles from Lulea.
From that hill, which is about six
hundred yards high, the beuutifnl
spectacle of the‘midnight sun' can
he admitted in better conditions
than auy other place. The 24th of
June is the day selected for the as
cension—it is the longest in the
year, the sun being twenty*two
hours above the horizon. This year
the 24th of Juno was not farored
by fine weather, and owing to n
cloudy sky the sun was not visible
at midnight, bnt the following day
travelers weie well lewarded for
their trouble, the sun shinig bright
ly at midnight.—London Globe.
