BANNER-WATCHMANATHENS GEORGIA BANNK -WATCHMAN OltTerdtSeastadOUrkr.OjeaeeSlaaSt anttei. MiMkUrHuWkkTa: Haiti. 15; Sunday, St; WeeklvSi: if called upon to do to. They want othrre to ateumt a tank that they are not willing to accept. We would like for tbi« great-discoverer of municipal mare’* neat* not to OUB CITY FATHERS ATTACKED. In another column a corrvapond- ent baa teen lit to severely Jcenaurc the mayor and council of our city. ••Anti-Jobbery" evidently hat a ipite against the Citizen's ticket, < r at least tome gentleman thereon, and il he gave it hit support at all it wat begrudgingly given. We will set out by stating that the Citi zens’ ticket hat only or.e majority in council, and the absence of but a tingle membur gave the other tide the power. Tbit it why the city a torney wat tc-instatcd, after alio - ithing hit office. One of the alder men on the Citizens' ticket Watties, and the other tide, having a majori ty, elected an attorney;and we will say that they were perfectly con sistent in to doing, at the member! that day in the majority had voted against abolishing'the office. The commission paid Mr. J. II. Ruckei for telling the public school bond ( wat given under the tollowing circumstances: In accordance wiib t ic law on the subject the hones Were advertised for tale and bids asked. On the day appointid c juncil met to rereive said bids. There were several ol them. Mr. R't bid Wat the lowest, but he de manded the usual broker's commit tal! lor placing the securities. A calculation was made, and it wat found that there wat a saving ol icveral several hundred dollais in accepting hit oiler. Ol course the lowest bid waa accepted, and it wa> Mr. Rucker's. As to not publish ing what the money wut voted for in the papers, if our correspondent had taken the trouble to inform himsclt before making hit attack, he would have seen that bills air nevrr itemized it the published pro ceedings, but only the names and amounts given To itemize ac counts would take up coiumns ol the papers, and entail an unnecessa ry expense on the city, at the bills are ail on tile in the clerk's office, and any tax-payer has the right to ace and examine them. These bonds were floated at j per cent, an 7 per cent, ia t te lowest rate at which nny previous administration h d negotiated city loans. If -May or Reaves or the Finance commit tee, at the correspondent intimates, had detired to enter into a coalition w th Mr. Rucker, by which they would rob the city ol $500, it teema to ut that they would have struck for a little larger interest- As to the fee paid Capt. W. W Thomas for plana and specifications of our public school bjildingt, we know r nothing about the mat er further than it was left in the bands ol a c umnittce of three honest and prominent members of council, out of whom is bound by peculiar and warm ties to “Ai,t-Jobbery.’ And besides, L'apl* Thomas would not hayc made tortionate ci.a-gcs against the city. We know that the price paid him is not in excess ol what other cities and counties give for such Work, and in our estimation it wat seasonable enough, in face of the fact that he had twice tu entirely change bit ph m, and he must ex ercise a gener.l super. I ion over the buildings for nearly a year, while they are in course of con-’ struction. A cheap architect, like a cheap doctor, it generally a poor Investment. It amuses u, to lca j what •‘Anti-Jobbery” baa to say about aldermen taking ”salariea," when he was one ofthe; most ar- dent endorsers of the reeoltfticn When it patted. If 0U r correipon- dent feels that there is any great fortune in managing the city affairs fur *to a year, wc are willing to resign lo-day and use what influ ence wo may possess to have him d cted in our place. Tue pittance Athens pays her aldermen it a verv saiall compensation (bribeamoau of eerdem required of t!w»- no , C Hinting the abuse of such unties •as “Ami-Jobbery.” The very mea Wbo most prate about salaries, would refuse to serve the city themselves stop where ha has, but reduce to writing everything that he can find the least suspicious ia the official acts of our city council. Don't .in dulge in any vague insinuations that there it a great deal yet behind, too numerous for enumeration.” Our space is at j our service. Tell ut all that you know. That our Mayor and council Have ina-Je mistakes we do not pretend to deny. It is human that they sliould do so; but we do assc p t that lot a member of the tody has been -uilty of corrupt pru-.ticer—as our correspondent insinuates and no on will believe it. The writer of this editorial lias the honor to be one of he representatives from the second ward, and if“Anti-Jobbery’’intern s insinuate tbs', in either hia nTic'al or privu'e capacity, he has b en guilty of any act unbecoming an honest man and a gentleman, he wilfully and slanderously misrepre sents us. We feel that the other members of the body are fully able to defend their own honor, that has been so unjustly assailed. “Anti- Jobbciy" evidently feels an enmity against some individual member of c undl, and we think it would have been fairer and more courageous in him to have singled out the ob ject of h:» attack, than have assailed th.- e-itire body, in the unwurran ed nunner that he lias. If he will but t ke the trouble to inform himself ie will *ee t hat over *3,coo have been .avecl ti the city already this year, and that our municipal government is honestly and faithfully adminis tered. The entire body wants to do rig':t, and when they make a mis- akc.arc always prompt toacknowl edge their error and right it. The idea of Mayor Reaves and the gen tlemen 011 his board entering into a combination to wrong the tax-payers, Is a charge too ridicu lously sltridcrous to need dcniel. We do not suppose there is a man in Athens who would give ear to such bosh. No doubt seme of the icts of our city lathers deserve crit icism, hut when Mayor Reaves is compare?) with Boss Tweed, and the councilman to the thic. ing crew at his side, every discerning man will readily Sec that there is some thing more behind ‘'Anti-Jobbery's' 1 communication than a 1 honest de sire to criticise the acts of public ser- vuntt.
