The report was received and

Council then adjourned.

Clerk of Council.
Dr. Madden Interviewed—He says
He is Not Inconsistent.
“Good morning, Dr., we sec your
Opponents have taken a new hitch on
you this morning.”
“Yes,” said the Doctor, “the whole
fight hinges on me; but what is the
new hitch.” , —
“Well, they say you are inconsis-
tant; that some time ago, before you
were a candidate for re-election that
you fought the Compress Company
on their exemption from taxation,
but that now you are perfectly will
ing to grant almost anything; that
you have even espoused the cause of
the cotton factory, and are willing to
give all they ask, and exempt them
for ten years.
“Mr. Editor,” said the Doctor, “that
is all true and if you will listen to
moUne moment I will explain my po
sition, and you or any other sane man
will see that I am correct. To begin
with I am opposed to this exemption
business, altogether; it is contrary
to the spirit of the constitution as
well as the letter, but if we do in
dulge in any of it, I am in favor of
doing that Which will best serve the
greatest number of people.
“I?ow listen. I am opposed to any
exemption that takes money out- of
the pockets of the many for the ben-
fit of the few. When we exempt all
must be benclittcd.
“The Compress Company will run
only a few months out of the year,
and employ but a few hands. The
cotton and woolen mills will employ
frem 200 to 1,000 operatives from
January to January. They will be
located right here in the city, and
every dollar paid out to them will
come back to us all—to the mer-

He was a neatly dressed young

happiness. The question was di

as the youth was winding up his

said: “You seem happy this morn*

correctly ?”
“You bet it did. If the election

It was brought from tlic Hales place,
on the Appalachee river. The vein
is from four to six feet below the
surface, and is from eighteen to
twenty four inches wide, running
northeast and soutwest, crossing the
river just above the railroad bridge,
then runs southwest to Britton
Smith’^ old homestead, and shows
some signs of gold about a mile fur
ther on to Mr. Palmer’s. There is
about 212 acres of laiid in the Hales
place. The extent of the vein is
nearly three-fourths of a mile on this
place. There are strong indications
of other veins, not yet discovered.
Some silver has been discovered in
the same vein. • The place is seven
miles above Monroe—about one mile
of Tanner’s store. Several experts
have examined this ore and pro
nounce it to be gold.
