WEEKLY ADVERTISER-APPEAL.
T. G. STACY & SON, PUBLISHERS.
BRUNSWICK, GEORGIA. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1888.
ESTABLISHED 1875
The Hospital-
I am ordered by the ladies of the
Hospital Building Association, to
notify the public thatta Fair will be
opened at L’Arioso Hall, to enable us
to continue the work on the Hospi
tal. on Monday Nov. 26th 1883, and
to urge and entreat all who feel
interest in the relief or amelioration
of human suffering to patronize the
Fair. Or. st least to contribute “a
mite" if no more, towards creating
a refuge for the sick and strangers,
travellers bv land or sea. All who
may stiller from accidents on shot'
or the great deep.
Many have already contributed
generously, some in cash, some in
materials, some iu labor, some in
personal service, and we are rich in
promise's of aid in the future.
Here at least is a platform which
all can cheerfully and heartily en
dorse “irrespective of age, sex (sect)
or previous condition,” for no one is
so high or low, rich or poor, old or
young—no creet^ or nationality but
is subject to the risk of accident, to
sudeu illness, and to whom the hos
pital with its resident physician, its
efficient nurses, its convenient means
for relief and restoration may not be
the one supreme chance, nay hope for
life, or at least the prevention of a
maimed body for all one's future.
In the marvelous growth of our
commerce, tnc need of a llrst-elass
hospital—such as we havd laid the
foundation for—where the seamen
mat - receive prompt attention right
at hand, and have every necessary
comfort, as well as skillful treatment
is imperitive, and every man or wo
man benifitted by that com
merce should feel obliged to help
" ski!I"**and comfort combined can
qfliekly restore the sailor to his
ship.
A good Hospital will surely con
tribute no little to the natural advan
tages our port already posesses.
and it is a blot, a serious drawback
to any port wanting in such a ne
cessity as a Marine Hospital.
We h ave secured our lot, the
foundation is laid, the walls are
slowly—alas! that I must say slowly
rising above the ground.
The head of one of our largest
business firms replied to my appeal
in behalf of the Hospital: “Wait un
til your building is being built on
r the ground and not on your sub
seriptiou book, and I will contri
! bute.” Any and every one can now
contribute according to his or her
means’and inclination, ru money, ma-
( terial6 or labor, for we have begun
to build upon the ground,” and by
God’s help we will; finish the good
work. We have a certain faith that
we shall succeed, and ou-r men will
I help us to that success. Any cou-
tributioss of money, will, if sent the
I Secretary and Treasurer, Mrs. Helen
C. Bostwick, be duly accredited upon
'our books.
All contributions t<> the Fair can
bo sent to the resi■■.•of Mrs. Ma-
1>ry, or to L’ar .so ..ad.

Auotlier Good Joke.
A merchant who had just returned
from New York, and who had sent
on ahead of himself a lot of this
loud smelling cheese, so delicious to
the palate of the epicure, looked over
his shelves, and not seeing it. call
ed out to one of his clerks:
“Say where is that — cheese I sent
down last week ?"
Clerk, taking him off to one side,
whispered in his ear:
“It was spoiled and I threw it in
the back yard.”
So Often Late-
Our business men are getting red
hot over the constant delays of our
daily mails, especially the northern
mails that come in from Jesup and
the S. F. ifc W. R. R. It is late from
one to three days a week, and some
times several hours late. The Board
of Trade should look into this tiling
and straighten if up. A gentleman
refused to ship cotton this way re
cently on account of our mail facil
ities. We can't afford that.
Ladies Invited.
After consideration the Y. M. C.
V. has decided to admit ladies to the*
lectures. They will throw the par
lor. reading and game room all into
one so they can accommodate the an
lienee. Prof. Branham wili lecture
on “One phase of the situation in the
new south.” If you wish to hear
something good go to-night.

Nothwithstanding Florida is call
ed the-‘Hand of Flowers," there are
very few (lowers in the state. In
fact nearly every other state has
more. The New Orleans Times-
Democrat savs: Florida is called
our women iu their labor of love, the laud of flowers, not because the
which aims to build a house where Spanish discoverers found any (low
ers there, but because of the state
was made on the Pasqua' Florida. J
the Catholic holiday of the flower
festival. This name, however, which
has ever since stuck to t hirsute, has
induced many persons to believe
that Florida is an immense garden:
hence when nbvtheie tourists pour
into it and find that instead of pos
sessing many flower gardens, it is
more deficient in them tliaa any
other part of the country, they are
both astonished and disappointed.”
The Jacksonville Times-Union says
the want of flowers is due to the soil
and to tbcabsense of sutllcient mois
ture at the proper season of the year
It suggests a system of irrigation
that might overcome the difficulty
ami urge the people to improve
their flow gardens.
