THE FREIGHT GAR.
. If IS Coaid Talk It Could Tell Manj In-
tereettng Storlee.
Thera is something romantic about
a frieght car, although you might
hardly think it. To an observant
mind, the long lines of box and flat
cars lying congenially on tho side
track of some great railroad, with
thejr letters of introduction pinned on
their breasts, as it were, in the shape
' of moreor less artistic lettering, aro full
of curioussuggcstions. Hero and there,
too, will bo seen cars in isolated posi
tions, seemingly reaching out for
sympathy in their temporary loneli
ness. (Airs from tho north, south,
cast and wostj cars from the great
Trunk lines; cars with signs telling
whom it may concern that thoy belong
to the army of freight cars that rum
ble busily to and fro on tho "Sunset
Boute," or the “Soo line," or tho re>
mantic and rugged “Canadian Pa
cific." Hero will bo a battered and
weather worn car from tho great west,
hobnobbing, and, as it were, shaking
hands, with an iron grip, with a
Mnino Central, or a blue uoso car, if a
cur from tho country of our loyal
neighbors c«n bo given the same name
as the inhabitants. There aro red,
blue, white, brown and crushed
strawberry freight cars, and parti
colored freight cars—harlequins of
their respective roads.
A freight car is an innocent looking
affair, l! looks us though it was work
ed too tiard to liavo life enough for
anything clso, and yet a freight car
sometimes goes olf on u tangent. So
frequent, indeed, is this sreukness on
tho purt of ihe freight car that a man
called a "trucer" is constantly employ
ed by all railroad lines to hunt them
down, and bring them and their con
tents hack to their legitimate stopping
places. A car tracer knows some
thing about tho peculiarities of a
freight car. lie knows something about
a freight car’s romantic longing to be
oulnml away. A genial gentleman of
Boston, a former car tracer, said the
other day in conversation with foe
writer, that ho hud been all over tho
country after recreant cam of tho
froight |>crsuu£ion, and that he had
known instances of a cur being lost
• for three years, and finally turning
up unexpectedly, liko a sort of rail
road prodigal son. ready to lx) for
given. Tho person whose duly it is
to ferret out, or over, or up tho truant
■cars has his hands full. Telegraph,
telephone and the mail are nil in
voked, and if theso fuil, he goes per
sonally und acts tho part of a freight
car detective.
If a cur could observo, and then
speuk, it would have much to tell.
Tho unimportant, dusty, greasy look
ing cars thut huddle by wharf and
storehouse, and between immense rod
wuHs in a stifling air, lmvo seen tho
Little Juanita gleaming in tho moon
light, pensively, or tho slumberous
Niagara drop rockwnrd and bedew the
night. They liavo seen, or would
havo, could they hnvo observed, tho
rock heights and the moist depths of
the rugged and wild country through
which tho Canadian Pacific threads
its way. In fact, tho scones a business
liko and vicious looking freight car
has passed through would furnish
sketches by pen and pencil for tho
world's press in a limitless scries of
articles.
Besides its more prosaic office, tho
freight cor is tho drawing room, tho
sleeping car and the bullet, to a cer
tain extont, of the gentry In rags and
tutters. lie, tho member of tho tat
tered gentry in question, hangs to tho
inside or tho outsido of tno freight car,
and, If he is not suffocated or other
wise annulled in the former position,
he is quite likely to let go his hold in
tho latter and the next section man
that conics along finds the mangled
and last remains of somo grlovous

risks tho tramp takes in appropriating
rides on lliu freight train uro many,
and almost any casualty occur
ring to any train contains the mime
, of some wretch, “to fortune and to
funio unknown,” who left for his
long homo on tho freight train.
Ono method taken by tram]>s in
riding is to stand with each foot

A good, strong, modem froight car
is worth |J00. Sorno arc valued at $330
and ClSO. Tho cars used to bo 28 feet
long, but now thoy are usually 80 feet,
ana there is a movement to secure 32
foot cars for lumber, etc.
To conclude, did you over think of
how thinks inanimate aro often in
vested with almost human attributes!
So it is with freight cars, as with
many other things of much interest
and more worthy of attention. Freight
cars are more worthy of notico than
passenger cars, on account of thoir
very roughness and battered condi
tion, and their unostentatious freight
yard retirement So it is in higher
matters, and when wo have to deal
With humanity. Tho least display

as in other lines of conduct also, a cer-
beneficial lesson may bo drawn
the wandering freight car.—

cause the great households call for

The majority of tho domestics spring
