Simple Childlike Faith Necessary in Time of Peril c £Mr. Hames Declared Preaching a plain gospel sermon, Rev. S. A. Harris, pastor of the Sam Jones Memorial Church, was heard by a large congregtion at the Presby terian church last Sunday evening. Preceding the sermon Mr. Joseph Calhoun and Mrs. Bradley Howard wing a duet, Mrs. Womelsdorf at the organ. Mr. Harris-took his-text from Rom ans, first chapter and seventh verse, “The just shall live by faith." Faith is the foundation of the busi ness and social structure, Mr. Harris declared at the beginning of his ser mon. He mentioned the long and pa tient years spent by Cyrus W. Fields in projecting his idea of a trans Atlan tic cable, and of the famous journey by Livingstone into the heart of Africa, made solely upon the faith that God would lie his guide through the trackless wilds, and with the idea ever before him that he would be serving humanity. The remarkable experience of the apostle John on the Isle of Patmus was mentioned as nothing less than the test of his faith. Getting into the heart of. his ser mon, Mr. Harris led his hearers by timely illustration to the jjoint where he declared that a simple r diild-like iaith in the divinity and power oi Jesus Christ was necessary to reap the benefits that are in store for the Christian in this life and in the life .to come. As he concluded his sermon, Harris called particular atten i Hon to the great need of faith upon ! the part of our people at ‘this time j because of the war clouds which are hovering low r . He cautioned that noth ing short of a calamity may be fac ing our beloved country, but with an unquestioned faith in God he believed that everything would work out and in the end God’s great plan would be served. The union services, which will con tinue for sometime yet, will be held next Sunday evening at the Sam Jones .Memorial church and Rev. FORMER BARTOW COUNTY BOY HAS MADE GOOD The following from an Atlanta newspaper will be read with interest by Bartow county people who had the pleasure of knowing Captain Lyon dur'iig his residence in this > ction several years ago. ATLANTA JOURNAL BUREAU, Camp Gordon, Ga., Feb. 16. The many friends of Captain Henry W. Lyon ad jutant of the Camp Gordon military nolice, will be glad to learn that *the Captain is thoroughly recovered from his recent severe illness. He has been out of the hospital and at work sever al days and Saturday found him “as fit as ever.” Captain Lyon is a Cartersville, Ga, boy, but spent most of his life in At lanta, where lie was associated with the Aetna Insurance Company unil the Fort McPherson training school open ed last spring. He was one of the few who were graduated from that, school with the rank of captain, and in his capacity as adjutant has done much to make the Gordon military police the efficient body which it is today. Both at Camp Gordron and in pre vious civil life in Atlanta. Captain Lyon has won a host of friends.
