liE TRIBUNE-NEWS DOES TRUST FOLLOW BROKEN PROMISE? We are in the midst of the greatest undertaking ever as sumed by a nation in the history of the world. It calls forth the greatest efforts and, in many cases, the greatest sacrifices men can give. This tremendous undertaking, these individual ef forts and sacrifices, to be effective, must be under the direction of a great, good and wise leader. Such a leader is Woodrow Wilson. It is to him we look to raise tremendous armies, to build battleships, to provide a merchant marine in which our products and supplies can be shipped to the allied nations and our own armies, to supply munitions of war, to wisely levy tax es so that the burden will be borne by those most able to carry it, to feed our soldiers and those of our allies, to keep all things at a maximum of production necessary for our existence. It is upon him, as upon no other person or force on earth, the peo ple of the United States, as well as those of France, England, Italy and Belgium, place dependence. But he must have a sympathetic congress. When that great day comes, after an armistice is declared, and the armies of the nations involved in this terrific conflict are resting upon their arms waiting for the terms of peace to be agreed upon, Woodrow Wilson will sit at the peace table, the conceded Master Mind of the allied leaders, although their greatest statesmen will be there also, it will be upon him we will place our dependence to secure terms that will insure a lasting and permanent peace. But he must have a Senate that will back him up. Is it not fair that we should place in the congress of the United States, in the United States Senate, men in whom he has confidence? He cannot trust Hardwick, nor can we of Georgia again. Hardwick lost the confidence of the President after promising the people of Georgia that he would support the administra tion and then, after thus securing his election, proceeded to fight every important measure *for which the administration stood, both before and since the war. He cannot trust Howard because upon Howard’s own re quest he granted him a personal interview to the exclusion of very important public problems, in order that Mr. -Howard might discuss his own ambition to be a Senator from Georgia, 4 4. and, after doing so, and the President frankly telling him that he favored Mr. Harris as far back as last April, Mr. Howard made a promise to support Mr. Harris and to speak for him throughout the state. He broke the promise made to the great President of the United States. He cannot trust Howard be cause, after finding out that the President was for Mr. Harris, he directly or indirectly caused the publication of a news story in The Constitution a few days later which sought to create the impression that the President had no choice. He cannot trust Mr. Howard because the latter permitted the publication, with the false impression it conveyed, to stand, until the President called upon Mr. Howard to correct it. He cannot trust Mr. Howard because "when the President writes to Clark Howell substantially the same thing he told Mr. Howard, the latter seeks to create the impression that the President has been deceived by Clark Howell, knowing deep down in his soul that the President had written to Howell pre cisely what he had told Schley Howard months before. Nor can he trust Mr. Howard because the latter is seeking to belittle him in the eyes of the people of Georgia as one who is easily fooled, notwithstandining the kaiser has never been able to fool him and Mr. Howard himself has not yet been able to fool him. A WISE DECISION. Undoubtedly the presence and effic ient work of the motor pumper at the lire Friday saved thousands of dollars worth of property. Had it not been for the presence of this modern fire fight ing: apparatus, capable o fthrowlng a stream of water with a pressure of 250 pounds, those best able to judge say it would have been impossible to have controlled the fire and keep it in the small area which it ravaged. There was no little opposition to its purchase but the efficient work it rendered last Friday convinced any one that Carters ville needed just such a machine and that it was not bought a single day too early. Several times during the course of the tire it looked as though the (lames were going to get a headway which could not be stopped. Yet, when the hose, fed by the pumper, was turned on the blaze, it soon gtve way to the terrific pressure Since the fire last Friday there Ims been no little discussion relative to the advisability o£ the city condemning tnc present location of the large gasoline and oil storage tanks and having them moved to the outskirts of the town or in a more isolated section. It so liap happens that within a few' hundred yards of the present location oi these tanks there live scores of families, men, women and children —whose lives were imi>eriled by the fire of last Fri- Friday. So great was* the danger, in fact, that city officials sent runners throughout that .= advising tr.e quarters farther away, and certainly more safe. This should not be, and we believe that the local agents for the two com panies actively engaged in selling ex plosive oil in Cartersville will join heartily in a petition to their respec tive companies urging that they of themselves voluntarily agree to move their tanks to a different locality. However, should force be necessary we believe it should be exerted, and that the best interest of the town de mands the early removal of these heavy-capacity tanks, which at any moment may explode and bring death and disaster to many innocent people who happen to live within close prox imity to their present location. PLENTY SEED WHEAT If the farmers of Georgia encounter any difficulties or have any doubts with regards to the planting and grow ing of wheat this fall and winter, they should correspond at once wivn the Georgia State Market Bureau in At lanta, which will be glad to assist them in the m atter of procuring seed or to supply them with any informa tion which they may d< The department is urging the gen eral planting of wheat, at least to the extent of two acres to the plow, all over Georgia this fall, and each farmer should select his best acres for this purpose and prepare them now. They should also make arrangements in ad vchce to secure good seed and be in readiness* for planting at the proper date. Thnre is no more patriotic ser vice the farmers of Georgia can ren - der, nor is there any crop at this time which will pay them bettor, both in the material returned and in the satis faction which they will derive from the conscience of having done their duty to humanity. Stenographers Are Given Opportunity To Enlist at Once The Local Board this week received an order to the effet that it will receive a call within a short time for a large number of good stenographers who have had legal training. Only whites 'n group “C,” qualified for limited or special service, will be accepted under this call. Men who qualify under this call will probably be assigned to the Judge Advocate General’s and Provost Marshal General’s department and they will be required to report Court Martial cases and other matters per taining to military law in the field. The work is interesting and will give valuable experience to the fortun ate applicants. Qualified registrants are urged to present themselves to the Local Board at once and have their names listed for this service. The Lo cal Board has been cautioned not to permit any registrant to enlist who is not fully qualified for this particular service, and under the instructions re ceived, it will not formally induct men until the orders are received from the Provost Marshal General’s office. There are quite a number of regis trants in Bartow County who are fit ted to qualify under this special call and the Local Board is very anxious for them to report at once in order that their names may be entered for the expected call.
