SHIELD BRAND| CLOTHING | — —i m Modification of Recent Coal Orders Issued By Officials Dr. L. G. Hardman fuel adminstra tor for Georgia, has issued slight mod ifications as to coal regulations. The order of August IC, provided that only 25 per cent of the estimated winter’s supply could be delivered at the pres ent time. A later order issued last Sat urday, provides that dealers and distributors of domestic lump coal may fill all orders for coal to the amount of four tons or less, 100 per cent. Orders for more than four tons, up to and in cluding eight tons, may be filled 50 per cent, and orders for more than eight tons may be filled 25 per cent. The order states that as soon as all applications on file shall have been filled to this extent, dealers may pro ceed to fill the balance of such orders, subject to such restrictions as the lo cal fuel administrator may find it necessary to make. The new order applies only to domestic coal, and or ders for run-of-the-mine coal may be filled 100 per cent. RAISE MORE CORN TO FEED MORE HOGS There is an old saying in the middle west that a farmer “Raises more corn to feed more hogs to buy more land to raise more corn to feed more hogs.” The hog up there is frequently called "the mortgage lifter.” Here in Georgia he is fast beooming a disturber of the old time credit system, says J. F. Downing, the Georgia Pig Club Agent. In 1910 the census showed 33 coun ties in Georgia raising a sufficiency of home-raised meat with some to sell. The counties were: Bryan, Bulloch, Charlton, Clinch, Coffee, Colquitt, De- Grady, Irwin, Liberty, Lowndes, Mont catur, Echols, Effingham. Emanuel, gomery, Pierce, Pulaski, Rabun, Screven, Tattnall, Thomas. Tift, Toombs, Towns, Turner, Union, Wayne and Wilkinson. It will be observed that only two of these counties are in north Georgia; Rabun and Towns. All of the others are in a warm climate; some of them in a temperature where butchering without ice is a gamble on the wea ther. What a change has taken place since then. Today there are 75 coun ties that are producing one hundred or more cars of hogs a year. In these counties are large pig club enroll- j merits. Norris is Coun ty Chairman. Mr. F. V. Dennison, one of the f.eld secretaries for the Army Y. M. C. A. organization, spent several days in Cartersville this week, in conference with a number of the leading business men of the town and county. Asa re sult of these conferences, Mr. John T. Norris was apointed county chaoman, and he has accepted the appointment. Rev C. L. McGinty is vice-chairman, and the executive committee is com posed of Messrs. James Smith. A. Cook. N. C. Adams, J. S. Calhoun and J. A. Miller. Sub-committees have been appointed, and every section of the county will be represented in the list of workers, who have been ap pointed from the city wards of Car tersville, as well as the various dis tricts of Bartow county. The purpose of this organization is in preperation for the country-wide campaign. which will follow closely upon the heels of the next Liberty Loan drive. The Y. M. C. A. is asking for a fund of one hundred million dollars for its own use, and twelve million for the Y. W. C. A. work. It is hoped that the to tal subscription will be greatly in ex cess of the above amount. Georgia’s quota is a little over a million dollars and an effort will be made by those in charge of the Georgia campaign to double the quota during the drive in Georgia this fall. Bartow county’s quota has been iix ed at ten thousand dollars, and this is the minimum apportionment for the county. Chairman Norris and his co workers are very hopeful of at least doubling this sum. They are confident that when the full import of the gi gantic task undertaken by the Army Y. M. C. A. is fully understood, no good American citizen will be satisfied with doing anything less than his full duty. The very helpful services afforded the American boys are well known to thousands of households represented, either in the training camps or over there. The forth-coming campaign is to be waged solely in the interest of those boys. Bartow county has given scores and scores of her boys to the cause of free dom. Godfrey Heads Tech Radio Department Profesosr W. E. Godfrey, for twenty years a member of the faculty of Mer cer university, has accepted an ap pointment as head of the radio depart ment at Tech. He also will teach in the regular physics department. Pro fessor Godfrey is recognized as one of the South’s leading instructors. ♦ ...
