Baptists Making a Whirlwind Finish of Debt-Raising Drive While America was going in debt to whip the Kaiser, the Baptists of Geor gia are getting out of debt to whip the devil. They are a very progressive peo ile. They are now in the closing days if a campaign to raise one hundred tnd fifty thousand dollars in about six veeks. This amount is needed to put (very one of their institutions out of debt. Two years ago, before the calls for Liberty Loans and Y. M. C. A. drives became so frequent they started out to faise a million dollars, to be used in wiping out a number of long standing debts, chiefly debts against Mercer University, Bessie Tift College, and the Orphans’ Home. It was a heroic undertaking when you stop to consider that they had to raise not less than a million dollars to carry on their regular work. They have carried on their work, given lib erally to the War Funds and now have about three hundred and fifty thous and dollars to apply on the debt. From the days of the Revolution down to the present time the Baptists have been i numbered among the patriotic people | of America. They have always stood j nobly by any work that was calculated j to uplift the country. They will see the j Importance of ridding their colleges of ' debt and of putting their Orhpans' j Home in a position to care, in the best I manner, for their dependent children. If the local boards inform the com mander of the mobilization camp that it could place fifty machinists, that number of men coming under the jur isdiction of the board making the re quest could at once be discharged from rhe army directly into civil jobs. Congressmen who were acquainted with Crowder’s plan have indorsed it. They declare it was the only possible way so far suggested for the domobi lizating an army of millions of men without a sidden glutting of the labor markets and consequent disturbances in every community in the country. FIELD WINTERING IDLE HORSES At this time of the year practically all the heavy work on most farms has been finished, and during the winter horses are more or less idle. Since idle horses give no return in labor performed, the feeding should be as economical as possible, and proper care should be taken of the animals in order that they may be in the best possible condition for work in the early spring. Horses should not be confined to the barn durng the winter on a liberal supply of grain. It is far better to “rough” them through the cold months. They should be given the run of the yard or lot during the day. This should be provided with a protected shed, one that is thoroughly dry and provid ed with bedding. While nature does her part and protects the horse with a heavy coat of hair during the cold months the shed is necessary in order to afford the necessary shelter and protection against rains, snow, and cold winds Winter winds come mostly from the north and northwest and the shed should be so situated and con structed as to give the proper pro tection from this quarter. In the feeding of the idle horses high priced feed should be avoided in or der to keep them in proper condition at the lowest cost. It has been found that idle horses do very well on a win ter consisting of all the hay, oat straw, cornstalks, or sorghums they will consume, so that little grain is necessary.
