Of his sum nearly $0,000,000 was subscrib ed by the officers and sailors isi duty on our ships and in the war zones. Mrs. George Dewey, the widow of the great Admiral, had her subscription to the Loan credited to the Navy. The Navy’s subscription to the Fourth Loan is $10,000,000 more than its subscription to the First, Second, and Third Loans combined and be tween $15,000,000 and $20,000,000 more than its assigned quota. The Navy is doing its part in the fighting and in the financing of the Nation, and go ing “over the top” in both. It may he relied on, too, that the Navy is going to keep its bonds. UNITED STATES HOLDS MILLIONS IN INSURANCE Since Mobilizaztion Started, Government Has Put In Force Thirty-Five Billion Dollars of Protection For Its Soldiers. Secretary of the Treasury William G. McAdoo, has just made public the following interesting statement regard ing the first year of the operations of the war-risk insurance bureau: October 6, 1917, is a historic date in the annals of the Nation and of the great world war, for it marks the be ginnig of the wisest and most benefi cent provision for the dependents of soldiers and sailors in time of war ever .• •: ion in the history of the world. Backing Up Our Fighting Forces A large share of the six million fight ing dollars we mus mobolizfe to back up Pershing and his gallant men is go ing to pay family allowances, Govern ment compensation benefits and Gov ernment insurance benefits to our her oic soldiers and sailors and those de pendent upon them. Sustained by the assurances of the humane and gener ous provisions of the War-Risk Insur ance Act, America’s manhood is en abled to go forth to battle stout of heart and with unwavering confidence. Allowances and Allotments In the twelve months just ending the bureau has mailed more than six and one-half million checks in payment of allowances and alotments, represent ing a total distribution of almost $200,- of the families and dependents of our 000,000 for the care and maintenance fighting men. These wise and just provisions reach to every corner of the land. Approxi mately one million checks a month are now being mailed regularly to maintain this protection. Compensation for Death or Dis ability The act provides that liberal com pensation benefits, without cost to the soldier, shall be paid for death or dis ability incurred in the line of duty, and jn addition that every man wearing the uniform, who desires to provide ad ditional protection for his loved ones, may take out not lest* "than SI,OOO nor more than SIO,OOO of Uncle Sam’s in surance against death and total per manent disability. Uncle Sam’s Insurance In the past the Bureau has written nearly thirty-five million dollars of this insurance, or approximately as much ordinary life insurance as there was outstanding with all life-insurance companies in the world at the begin ning o fthe year. Our Army and Navy are more than 90 per cent insured and new applications are now being re ceived for more than a billion dollars of this insurance per week. The Achievement of One Year In the performance of this three-fold task the Bureau has within the year handled nearly three million nine hun dred thousand insurance applications, and more than three million eight hun dred thousand allotment and allowance forms, and it has been necessary to prepare and maintain under constant control more than twenty-six million separate individual card records. The Bureau has received and answered more than three million letters. From a small organization of twenty persons working in the basement of the Treasury building, the Bureau has grown until it now has a working force of 13.000 employees occupying thirteen buildings in Washington. Safeguarding the Soldiers’ Kin The Treasury department has left nothing undone to promote and improve ' the efficiency of the Bureau in its vast work and to reduce to a minimum the inevitable errors and delays incident to carrying outt so large a mass of de tails. It is the aim of the Treasury Department to make the Bureau of War Risk Insurance the most efficient as it is the largest organization of its kind. The work of the Bureau during its first year represents the largest ser vice ever rendered by any nation to the families and dependents of its fighting forces in the time of war. In ie wof the multitude and infinite variety of difficult details involved it represents probably the most supen dous task ever committed to a public or private organization to perform. The Bureau of War Risk Insurance today is perhaps the largest business unit in the world.
