Instances of effective poisoning of rodent pests, conucted under the su pervision of the biological survey of the United State-: department of agricul ture, are reported from the state of Washington, where one ounce of strylchnine applied to alfalfa hay bait killed 600 jackrabbits. In Idaho, 4,500 jackrabbits were killed by two ounces of strychnine on this bait. Pacific Ocean Once South Sea. Rome.—ltaly has turned her „-yes to the Orient to find new fields of trade nnd to develop close relations with Japan. Italian money Is at a premium in the far East and manufacturers say they find a readier demand for theii products there than in western coun tries. Importations from the East are also sought for Italy can carry on this trade under the best financial condi tions. Demonstrations favorable to Japan have been held in many Italian cities recently, the one at Naples (luring the visit, of a Japanese squadron to thal port being most notable. Decision to re-establish freedom of commerce soon, probably by June, has been reached by the council of minis ters. If supplied irregularly they are likely to drink too much at a time. It should not be ex posed to the sun’s rays in summer nor be allowed to freeze in winter, if this can be avoided. In very frosty weather it is often worth while to give the flock slighly warmed water two or three_ times a day rather than permit them to drink wa ter at the freezing point. A flock of fifty hens in good laying condition will require four to six quarts of water a day say poultry specialists of the United States department of agricul ture. • TEST THE SEED BEFORE PLANTING Practically the only element in crop production that the farer has com pletely under his control is the plant ing of good seed. It is, important that farm seeds be tested before they are sown. Other wise, a ful crop cannot be grown even under the most favorable weather con ditions. Seed testing for practical results, says the United States department of agri culture, can be done much more easily than is generally believed The essential preparation for mak ing seed tests consists of providing the simple apparatu necessary and of be coming familiar with the general pur poses and methods of testing and the features of importance peculiar to tests of particular kinds of seeds. Ask the county agent, or write the Department of Agriculture for a bulletin. Useful Kerosene. Housewives, with hut few excep tions, do not properly value kerosene.
