That the principal offices of said State of Georgia Once Held Lottery Back in the Sixties Only old records at the state library and a few pioneer citizens remain to tell the tale of the lottery that the state of Georgia conducted in Atlanta in 1866. Much delving into old newspapers and the histories of Georgia fail to bring to light intimate details of this queer episode, which has been passing ly referred to in years past. Capitol records show, however, that the chances cost $25 and SSO, and that the brick store on the present site of the Grant building was the scene of the gamble. The state received annual reports and a part of the proceeds, but the purjKise of the lottery was to raise funds fo a widows’ dnaprnahos shrd funds for a widows’ and orphans’ home. 1 The records of the Georgia legislature 1 for the year 1866 show that an act was passed modifying the laws against lot- | teries to permit certain parties to es- | lablish one in Atlanta; the records of 1876 show that this act was repealed; | records found in musty old papers at i the capitol show that annual reports of the lottery were made to the governor until the early seventies That is all. Histories dwell long j enough on reconstruction days, hut | none can be found that refers even i most distantly to the lotiery Old cit izens have been approached, but save that there was such a lottery these men j can recall nothing of it. JOHN CARTER'FINDS READY SALE FOR HIS VEGETABLES IN TOWN .John Carter, a well-known negro farmer of the Mission district, of this ounty. had a wonderfully large yield this year of blue dandium plums. He has brought quite a lot of them to town, and says he found a ready sale at twenty-five cents a quart. John also gives his attention to rais ing truck, and in recent weeks has sold quite a bit to Cartersville folk. Such an industrious worker as John Carter has proven himself to be, is in deed a credit to his race, and he has set an example worthy of emulation by ' all colored people. AND THEY MIGHT HAVE STAYED OUT UNTIL MORNING While driving along a country road one evening during the past week, a motorist suddenly found hims<Jf with out lights. Investigation showed the Ight fuse had burned out, and, as might have been expected, there was no extra fuses in the tool box. Deep thought for a moment, then out came the old cigarette pack. A little piece of tinfoil was torn off. wrapped around a short match stick, inserted in the fuse block and the party rolled merrily on It’s an old trick, but one worth re membering—especially when one motors beyond the call of the service station without extra fuses in the kit.
