At the first meeting of the Smdthville Community Council for the school year, which was called by Mrs. Charles Cox. chairman, for Saturday at 2 p. m., i large number of women and young people, as well as several men, met at he church where school is now in ses. sion. As this was the first meeting held • ee the Bartow county fair, at which into Smithville won in prizes first in e woman's department, and sixth in he agricultural (department, several minutes were spent in mutual congrat ulations over the splendid success achieved by our woman's department of the Community Council in securing first prize for rural community over such splendid exhibits of our com petitor.:, where competition was not only so splendid but so close. Mrs. Cox called the meeting to order and the first business cf the afternoon after reports were made was the elec tion of officers for the coming fair year Nov. 1921-Nov. 1922, and the following were nominated and elected as a whole: Chairman of Community Council. Pyron talked on tire impor tance of pure-bred poultry in the Smithville community, and all the members present pledged to raise at least one strain of pure-bred poultry n V It was tound there were at present Five members raising P. Segers for eggs to be furnished poultry club members in Bartow county’ for 1922, several pledged eggs, which can be se cured through Mrs. Segers. A discussion of what should be done | w ith the $65 won by' the club at the Bartow county fair was held at length. Airs. Segers asked that a domestic science department be equipped; Airs. Orr principal of the Smithville school, seconding her plea for the equipment that would make possible the serving of hot lunches to the children of the school during the cold weather of this winter. Mrs. Cox suggested that we use at least a small part of the money’ for the beginning of a school and community 'llrary. After much discussion a committee v.as appointed to suggest financial plans to the Community’ Council at th° next meeting, Friday, the 18th, at 2 o'clock, which report will be approved at that meeting. Airs. Oscar Peeples made a fine talk on the value of a Domestic Science de partment in the school, and spoke of plans for. the betterment of the com munity school for the 1921 and 1922 school year. The council then planned to have a program and box supper at the school for the benefit of the school on Friday evening. November 25, at 7 o’clock. Mrs. Orr and Miss Bryan agreed to sponsor the program. The council thanked Mrs. Sam Jones for some sp'endid magazines contributed to the school library. After the adjournment several min utes were spent socially, and all those who were present went away feeliqg that the Bartow' county fair was not in vain, if it did nothing else but cement the Smithville community into a coun cil of mutual interest and benefit, which even we cannot estimate the value. Miss Tarpley, of Fairburn, came Sunday and is teaching in the school. Miss Susie Williams, who has been in Atlanta for some time, is spending a short time at home, coming up for the Chrysanthemum show. Mrs. Graffln and little son, of Gads den, ar e visiting Mr. and Mis. Kary Sproull. Miss Nelle Cole, who was visiting in Birmingham, was called home Satur day by the death of her brother, Ed Cole. He had been a sufferer fqr a number of years and a patient shut-in for quite a while. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, Rev. S. A. Harris, of Cartersville, officiating. He is sur vived by one brother, Joe, and seven sisters,, Mrs. S. S. Atwood, Mrs. Joe Brandon. Mrs. Arthur Jackson, Misses Dora, Jennie and Nelle, of Stilesboro, and Mrs. John Hay, of Leland, Miss. The following special friends of the family acted as pall-bearers: Messrs. Joe Taff.. John Baker, Ned Beazley. Claude Brandon, Hugh Brandon and Kary Sproull. G. M. Jackson & Son were the morticians. Mr. and Mrs. Lawson Jackson, of Cartersville, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jo e Brandon. Mrs. Hester McConnell, of Gaines ville. who has been visiting her daugh ter. Mr. Murray Whitesides, of Aragon, was the guest of Miss Alta Williams Friday. , Mr. Paul McCrae, of Rockmart, was the recent guest of his sister, Mrs. John Taff. Rev. Jesse Hunt has been called t.o the pastorate of Raccoon church and has accepted, to the delight of his many admirers, both in and out of this church. The Misses Saggus visited their sis ter, Mrs. Albert Black, of Euharlee, Sunday. Many parties from different parts of the county attended the annual chrys anthemum show given by the club la dies Friday afternoon and evening. Mrs. Weston Tinsley, of Taylorsville, was the Sunday guest of home folks. Mr. and Mrs. Mell Nelson, of Euhar lee. spent Sunday with their daughter, Mrs. John Mullinix.
