What is the cause of typhoid fever? In what manner does the typhoid I bacillus enter the mouth? , Most frequently through articles of. food or drink. How do these become contaminated? ) Very frequently by flies which have I themselves been feeding on dejecta (discharges from the bowels) of per sons who have the disease, or of car riers. Food, and especially milk, is of ten contaminated by the dirty hands of a carrier. Frequently human sewage (bowel discharge) gets directly Into the [ water supply, especially where water ! Is taken from an open well and when | surface drainage is toward the well, and contaminated hands come Into : contact with the well bucket and rope used In lifting the water. What la meant by a typhoid carrier? This term refers to a person who has had typhoid fever, and has recovered, j but still harbors the typhoid germ In ! the gall bladder, urinary bladder and elsewhere. Can one get typhoid fever from de i caylng vegetable matter, barns, chick en roosts, pig pens and bad odors? No. Probably the only part such conditions play in the causation of ty phoid Is that they facilitate the breed ing of flies. Is typhoid fever a very expensive or dangerous disease? Yes, the privilege of having this dis ease costs the people of the state a sum of money probably much in ex cess of *1,000.000 each year. About 10 per cent of those who have the disease die, and many more are disabled by tu berculosis and other conditions. Many of those who recover succumb to tu berculosis during the next two years. How can typhoid fever be prevented? First, by means of sanitation, and second, through the administration of the anti-typhoid vaccine. Can a persbn dispose of human sew age in a sanitary manner except wher, sanitary sederage -is accessible? Yes, by means of sanitary privies. Where can plans for the construction of sanitary privies be obtained? From the county health officer. How many doses of anti-typhoid vac cine are necessary to produce protec tion? Three; one Injection every seven days until the three are given. What Is the duration of protection thus established? Probably two or three years. Can typhoid vaccine be obtained free of charge? Yea, the State Board of Health man ufactures and distributes vaccine en tirely free of coat to the citizens of the state. Very few have met me at these places so far. I do not know who wants the treat ment, or what community desires me to visit them for this purpose. If there are a sufficient number at any place, and they will meet me, and some one will wri e me of this fact, 1 will make a date to visit your community to give you the vaccination. Please let me know at once. Typhoid Vaccintaions. I have made the following appoint ments. I will make a date for all those who dseire for me to come to their community to give them the innocula tlon free of charge if you will let me know the number desirous of receiv ing same, and if in my power t 0 make a date I wilt do so. So if anyone desires the typhoid vaccination from me this year, I must ask you to write me at once so I can let you know when I will be near you to meet those who desire to be vaccinated this summer. So kindly let me know at once. I will make no more appointments unless 1 know that there is a sufficient number to meet me at an appointed place. R. tvenaall made a very Im pressive talk at the laying of the cor ner-stone of the new Methodist church. He spoke very complimentary of the splendid work and energetic leader ship of the good pastor, Rev. J. M. Crowe. He also commended the com mitteemen, the membership and the community at large for their loyalty and the progress they have made. They have a beautiful and substantial building well on the way, which will be a credit to Emerson and a monument to the most high God. Misses Sarah Shaw, Leila Milner and Martha Herring will leave Friday to spend about a week at Juliette Lowe camp, about thirty miles from Rome, with other girl acouts. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Joidan and Mr. Freeman Johnson, of the Stilesboro community, spnt last Saturday in town Mr. John Swanson, of Stilesboro, was a business visitor In Carursville last Saturday. Mr. W. B.
