It is said that the farmers are the

country will soon be without a back

T own and run a farm in Virginia.
Just how the farmer today is prosper
ing as against the eitj laborer the fol
lowing facts show: V
It takes 63 l-'2 dozen, or 762 eggs to
pay a plasterer for one day of e.ght
hours work.
it takes 17 1-2 bushels of corn, or a
year’s receipts from half an acre, to
pay a bricklayer one day-.
It takes twenty-three chickens weigh
ing three pounds each, to pay a painter
for one day s wor, v in New York,
It takes forty-two pounds of butter,
or the output froth fourteen cows, ted
and milked for twenty-four hours, to
pay a plumber sl4 a day. It takes a
hog weighing 175 pounds, representing
eight months feeding and care, to pay
a carpenter for one day’s work.
Who sees the way out?
The city workmans wages must de
cline or we farmers will stop farming
entirely, exactly what most of us are
doing.

year nearly 1,000 acres goes down in

Flappers Protest
Parent-Teacher Plan
To Enforce Modesty
Somerset, Pa., Aug. 30’.—This little
chy has been somersaulted into a style
class war with the bobbed hair,' lip
stick, waving flappers arrayed on one
side and her more timid sisters oi long
tresses on the other.
The first clash occurred yesterday,
when the Parent-Teacher Association
formally indorsed the "old-fashioned"
girl and took steps ;o pet lion the
school board to adopt a uniform style
uf dress for all si hi\o! girls. ’The rules
would bar silk hose, short skirts,
babbed hair and low neck, sleeveless
dresses.
But—the flapper contingent, hearing
of the meeting, stormed it.' Their ver
i hal protes., delivered in rhyme, was as
! short and snappy as the dress and man.
I per of the flapperette who delivered it:
"1 can show my shoulders.
I can show my knees; v
1 ni a free-born American;
And 1 can show what i please."

Big Shrine Barbecue
Wednesday two carloads of plain oak
cordwood were shipped from Jasper, to
Cleveland, Ohio, where it will be used
to cook a big barb'eeue on August 31.
Cleveland is to he' hostess this year
to the National Shriners’ convention.
Some members of the "Korna Club,'
the name of the Cleveland Shriller or
ganization, are also Elks and a.tended
the recent Elk convention in Atlanta.
The big barbecue caught their atten
tion and they decided Cleveland must
have one when the Shriners came to
see them. To lie sure ii was done right,
they engaged Mr. Elbert B. Thornton,
of Atlanta,, who was in charge of the
Elk barbecue, to come up and d,o it
for them.
Now C eveland is in the prairie coun
try with little op mr timber around
A barbecue can’t be cooked with just
anything. 4o when Mr. Thornton reach
ed the Ohio town he saw at once he
was going to have to get him, up some
wood. He knew his friend and bro.her
Shriller, T. W. Kellogg, of Jasper, Ga ,
would help him out.
When Judge Kellogg receive# his cry
for help he took the matter up with
Mr. Tillman Bennett, and the latter
agreed to furnish three carloads of dry
oak wood at $3.50 per cord. f. o. b. Jas
per. and now they are on their way.
Judge Kellogg did not charge any
thing for his services, agreeing to do
his part free provided they would give
the timber and the section it came from
a 'boost.
This may seem like' a very small af
fair to some of our readers, but the
publicity a section gets out of these
little things attracts the attention of
out-siders and materially helps in its
development
Modern Farm House
Burned to Ground
' Near Camp Ground
The home of Noah Price, near the
Morrison Camp Ground, was burned to
the ground early last night, the house
being a total loss. t The cause of the
hie was not known. Mr. Price stated'
last night that he had no way of telling
what started the fire, whether defec
tive wiring or "rat with matches "
The house war one of the most nrtod
erti faiqt houses in the county. It was
■ glued by electricity and had its own
waterworks system. Mr. Price stated
that he had some insurance on it, but i
nothing like enough te cover his loss.
The , blaze came about the time of
the close o the camp meeting, and at.
ttacted a large crowd of people to the 1
scene. \ ery little of the household ef- ■
