About

Clarence A. Perry, formerly editor of the Cherokee Advance, partnered with Paul F. Callahan, a job printer in Cartersville, Georgia, to establish the Bartow Tribune in February 1910. By March 1910, Callahan and Perry organized the paper under a stock company called the Tribune Publishing Company. The Tribune, much like the contemporaneous Cartersville News, was a four-page weekly that supported the Democratic Party. Although not political rivals, the two papers competed for subscribers and, by 1912, the Tribune outpaced the News’ circulation numbers. O. T. Peeples, who joined the Tribune as an editor in 1911, became a majority shareholder when Perry left the company in 1914. In 1917, Peeples bought the Cartersville News and merged the papers under a combined title. On January 1, 1918, M. L. Fleetwood replaced Peeples as editor-in-chief, but Peeples remained as president of the company. By 1920, however, Fleetwood was sole owner of the publication, which by 1924 was titled the Tribune News. The paper merged with the Bartow Herald in 1969 and continues to serve as Bartow County’s legal organ as the Herald-Tribune.
