on the altar is a representation of
God the Father and the Son, upon
a marble globe.”
The Academy of Fine Arts
showed us marvellous artistic pro
ductions chiefly of the Venetian
masters; being located near the
Iron Bridge and facing the Grand
Canal. Here we found Titian’s
world-renowned masterpiece “the
Assumption of the Virgin,” and
his beautiful “Presentation in the
Temple,” also Paolo Veronese’s
“Coronation of the Virgin” and
“Battle of Lepanto,” etc., etc.
The Rialto is the busy district
and engaged much attention, es
pecially the Rialto Bridge—a great
single span of marble, resting on
12,000 piles in the mud. We also
had pointed out to us “Shylock’s
House” and portico, made famous
by Shakespeare. We saw the far-
famed Venetian lace products and
also the process through which
the workers go in making it. Here
each employed girl is paid a france
(20 cents) a day, the price of a
piece being according to the time
of workmanship required. This
industry is patronized by the
Queen of Italy and the Govern
ment. Here also are made em
broideries, brocade, and damask.
Employment is thus given to a
vast number of women and girls,
something over 4,000. We were
told the Venetian Glass and
I Mosaic Manufactories at Murano
were very important and interest-
] ing, but we had not time to take
| them in our survey.
We were specially pleased with
, a long trip we took on the Grand
Canal of Venice, “the main street
of the City,” serpentine in shape,
intersecting Venice from north
west to southeast, and two miles
long, with palaces old and new,
residences, warehouses, banks,etc,,
! lining its sides, and gondolas and
! larger boats speeding o’er its sur
face. At night the air is filled
| with the music of pleasure-lovers
as they glide over the waves. We
can’t say we liked the odor of the
waters of Venice, however; and we
pie that find pleasure in gambling
of any sort by any means whom
soever they be!
Asleep, in Venezia, then on to
Milano!
