Queer T^ihM About Flame*.
There Is a relation between the color
of flatnc and the energy of the com
bustion causing It. The more vigorous
and complete the combustion the high-
er the refrnnglbllity of the light. A
flame burning In a tardy and restricted
way emits rays that are red. \Vhen
burning In a more complete and effec
tive manner the emitted rays change
to violet. The llanie of a candle or a
lamp consists of a series of eccentric
luminous shells surrounding a central
dark core. These shells of flame emit
light of different colors, the Innermost
one—that in direct contact with the
dark core—being red and having a tem
perature of exactly U77 degrees F.
Upon this and In their proper order of
refrnnglbllity are shells of light which
are orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo

Ruble*.
The finest rubies are still kept In
Asia. The Great Mogul had 10H large
rubles In his throne, and among them
was one weighing two and one-half
ounces. Of European rubles Charles
the Hold, that luckless son of a for
tunate father, had three rubles called
the Three Brothers, of perfect color
and worthy size. They passed Into the
possession of .lames I., who sent them
to "Baby Charles.” There Is a large
heart shaped hulas ruby In the Kng-
llsli crown. It has been neither cut
nor polished, Is only semitransparent
and is of a dark red, like a morello
cherry. Austria had, or has, an orien
tal ruby the size of u lien’s egg, and
Queen Elizabeth showed Sir James
Melville one as big as a racket hall.
Hnnjeet Singh had a large ruby with
the names of many kings engraved on
It. Among them was that of Aiming-
zeb. A king of Persia hud one which
he prized at. the value of a city or even
a kingdom. It was a table cut hulas
ruby of a beautiful color of ut least a
Anger’s breadth.

The singular superstition of the value

virtues of these stones are sung In the
