DEATH VALLEY CACTI
THE PLANTS THAT BLOOM IN THE
SUN SCORCHED DESERT.
Hundred* of Acre, of n Scene of Al-
iiioat liiile.riilinlilr llemily In the
Midst of Mile on Aide of Unrren nud
Deadly Sand Flat*.
Not half the plants of Death valley
are known to scientists; most of those
that arc known are little more than
names and will never he more until
the prying arm of the railroad shall
have laid bare some of the secrets of
tills vale of Hiuoin.
Most beautiful and most plenty on
the desert are the cacti, and the rapid
ity with which their dry and apparent
ly withered stalks put out blossom*
under the touch of the rains is wonder
ful.
The largest and showiest blossom of
them all grows on a short, stock stem
which during the summer does not
seem to have life enough to produee
the magnificent waxy flowers, which
are often as much as five Inches across.
A cactus much larger than this—the
barrel ouctus—has a very small and In
significant bloom, while the tiniest of
all, a low, creeping, round stemmed.
Jointed growth, has an Immense pink
flower, bcuuliful as any orchid aud
rivaling the fairest rose of Persia In Its
odor.
Unfortunately the names of these
rare species are not well known, and
the commoner varieties, which arc also
found on the coast slope, hear no such
gorgeous array of blossoms. Old
friends greet the traveler on the rim
of Death valley (oo. There Is the
chotln (pronounced ehoyah), which,
while large and many branched, pro
duces few or no flowers, reproducing
Itself by "slipping." as our grand
mothers were wont to say of their
choice geraniums. Wherever an un
usually long brunch falls to the ground
It seems almost (6 work its way Into
the earth, so soon do the shifting sands
cover It. Then a process of rooting
takes place, so that soon an entirely
separate plant comes up a few feet
from the parent. So it Is that great
beds of cacti are formed throughout
the desort.
One noticeable thing about all the
plants In and around Death valley Is
that they grow low to the ground, for
no living thing can stand agaiust the
simooms that sweep this level floor for
2(XI miles on over Into the Nevada des
ert. Those low glowers protect them
selves from the drifting sand In a won
derfully ingenious manner. When the
plant first breaks from the ground It
conies up not In one stem, as do the
taller cacti, hut In many tiny, branch
ing stalks, so that wlmt solid earth and
rocks there arc among the sand clouds
fall between these stalks and form a
sort of openwork barricade. Against
this the sand drirts, but does not
choke out the life of thq plant. The
winds of the desert always blow from
the same direction, so that the barri
cade Is always available, whether It
be a rain, wind or Hand storm that Is
blowing.

Wild animals oppressed liy heat are
almost human In their actions. They
seek shelter from the sun, thirst much
for water and fall down at last sun-
struck. The tigers of India seek jun
gles nearly impenetrable to man,
where in the pools tho* wallow for
hours chin deeji in the water rather
than endure the heat of the sun driv
ing through the mass of foliage over-
head,
some
the
t'attle seek the woods and shaded
spots when the sun begins to show Its
fury, but they are soon driven out by
a more deadly enemy, the armies of
bloodthirsty and keenly weuponed bi
sects, and resort to the hills. Curiously
enough, many Insects prefer keeping In
the shade to quenching tlielr thirst
with blood. When the cattle seek the
pools and streams lish gather around
to snap up the tiles killed by the tails
of the beasts.
Fishermen see deer along Adiron
dack and Maine lakes and streams in
the hot days of summer. The deer In
the streams nibble at a Illy pad now
aud ngalii aud swim across to IslandH
or the opposite shore.
No mammal hears the heat so well
as domestic cats. When dogs seek the
shade cats stretch themselves out in
the sun, and not till dogs pant In the
shade will they move Into the shadow.
When It Is hot cats drink a good deal
nnd lie quietly In a sort of doze, as if
thinking of ice heaps and snowdrifts.
According to mi niihnnl collector, the
polar hears seem to enjoy the heat of
midsummer. When the sun heals
down hottest these thick skinned
brutes lie stretched out in the full
glare, just as a dog or cat lies down
before a lire In midwinter.
The birds of the Helds, the roadside
i birds, the sparrows and the pigeons
bathe In the hot dust, hut also And de
light In n |iiii 1, drinking great quanti
ties of water and splashing about with
the greatest enthusiasm.
In England the rooks gather round
tile sheep troughs waiting eagerly for
the evening supply of water to he
turned on. In Australia parrots and
birds driven from their shady perches
and flying over an opening la time of
drought sometimes fall dead.
The woodchuck retires to the moist
depths of Its burrow, the squirrel to
Its home tree. The hare lies la the
long grass beside a brook In an alder
bed.
The snakes, the mud turtles, the
drooillllg Inserts seek the cattle paths
and road sands or some log In a pool
of water on which the sun heals heavi
est. The heat Is to them welcome.
