their arguments to the Commis
sion. Mr. Howell contended that
the licit line actually increased
freight hauls by a distance of four
miles and that the road has the
j right to collect additional freight
charges. Attorneys Wright and
Lovejoy contended that the road’s
present freight depot is no farther
from any point on the line than
was the original freight terminal
of the road. Many other reasons
were advanced to prove that the
road should not be allowed to raise
| freight charges.

CATES COAL COMPANY
The prices of coal at the mines are mounting by leaps and
bounds—as much as a dollar a ton during this month. The
margin of profit to the retailer is becoming perilously
small. We find collections very difficult. Our resources
are too limited to permit the large accumulation of ac
counts. So we have decided to sell only for
CASH
The situation forces us to this basis. On credit, we could very easily
convert all our stock-in-trade into the bins of our customers, and then
have nothing wherewith to restock our yards with coal. .Shipments
are slow and difficult, but we are making every effort to keep a large
stock of coal on hand for blizzard weather, and we will be pleased to
supply every demand made upon us.

ORR AND POWELL
The Price of a Kiss.
A WISE MAN
Or woman will read advertisements because they recognize
the fact that this is the business man's method of giving out
information which is of vital importance to all who are pros
pective buyers in the various
lines of merchandise. It is
our nature to want the best
goods for the least possible
outlay of cash, and the mer
chant who watches his busi
ness closely and buys his
goods right, can surely meet
all competition and often
times place bargains before
you which competition can’t
touch, an investigation of our
stock and a close study of the
high quality and excellence
of our furniture offerings for
this month, will result in the
satisfying of your wants at
prices which will make you
feel like you got the goods
for nothing.
Kisses come high in colored cir
cles in this town—sometimes,
i Charles Henderson, a colored gen
tleman, is sloM-ly awakening to this
! fact. Charles ViestoM cd an un-

, trouble upon himself. When
(Charles was arraigned before May
or Burdott, His Honor Mils horri
fied at the enormity of the crime,
and promptly demanded of Charles
$H0 or Ho days. Not having the
$H0 in his clothes and failing to
| find a friend willing to put up that
amount, Charles is iiom’ laboring
on the streets and (perhaps) re
flecting upon the rise in the price
of kisses in the local colored mar
ket.
