IMPROVEMENTS IN PHONE SYSTEM Bell Company has Completed Extensive Improvements in Newnan’s Local System. The Southern Bell bilities shows nssets. Llnbihtii s . Telephone Co. has completed extensive im provements on the local system in Newnan, after being engaged with the wprk for several months past. Altogether, a large force of men lias been employed in this under taking and during the past few weeks an unusually large number of expert workmen have been en gaged in completing the job. The public is hardly cognizant of the magnitude of the job that was completed this week, as muc h of the work done on the system does not impress the mind of the casual observer. However, briefly mentioned, the improvements are as follows: The outside wire plant has been replaced by a cable plant. It has required several months to complete these improvements and has cost the Bell Company a large sum of money, hut. they arc appreciated by Newnan people and the investment will prove a profit able one for tin* telephone com pany. The people of this city are liberal patrons of the telephone company, and there is probably not a town of Newnan’s size in the State in which the telephone com pany’s receipts are as large as in this city. It pays the Southern Bell Co. to spend money here. It is claimed that our local system now equals in completeness and efficiency the company’s system in Atlanta and other large cities. The News hopes this claim is well founded. If it not true, it ought to be. Newnan is entitled to first class telephone service, by reason of the town’s size and the large business accord ed the Southern Bell, as well as because of the fact that this com pany inis a monopoly of the tele phone business here and the rail's are high enough to justify first I class service, year; Newnan appreciates the im- • j proverncnls made on the local sys tem by the Southern Bell and hopes the company will continue to maintain a first class system and high grade service in this city. 2(15.(18 1(1(1. Savage dogs have caused many a man to travel for his health. An elevator some times enables a man to rise to the occasion. It’s a long honey moon that has no return to sanity. If it’s only a spekpm it’s jewels when a woman lose# it. When Mayor Burdett. called the City Council to order in regular session lust Monday night, all the Aldermen were present except Mr. Boone. Following is a brief sum mary of the business transacted: The Stm»t Committee reported adversely on the application of Dr. T. B. Davis to have a street opened through his property situ ated north of the cemetery. It. is proposed by Dr. Davis to open up the land for cemetery purposes, and the street was wanted for this purpose. On motion of Alderman Goodrum Council sustained thu action of Street Committee. On motion of Mr. Goodrum it was ordered that, beginning the first of the year, the city sexton keep in a hook a record of all burials in the city cemelary, the record to show inline, nationality, sex and age of nil persons interred. Action was deferred in reference to (’apt. A. B. Cates’ application lur sewer line through his proper ty in north Newnan. The line wanted would connect w ith .lack son Street line near the residence of B. I*. Cook and extend in a northwesterly direction through (’apt. Califs' property. Report-- from the Water and Light Commission and (lie Board of Health were read (o Council, and accepted, with the thanks of of the body to the members of the Commission and the Board. On motion of Mr. Goodrum tlio reports were ordered printed in till' Newnan newspapers. The same will be found elsewhere in this week's News. Alderman ('ole gave notice that at the next meeting of Council lie will introduce an ordinance to pre vent the obstruction of sidewalks by placing on them the wares of merchants and others, and b> pre vent the obstruction of the streets with old vehicles or other eyesores. The Mayor appointed a com mittee, consisting of Aldermen Goodrum, Glover and Colo,to take under advisement the imilter of adding another story to the lire depart headquarters building. The annual license ordinance was passed. It is of about the usual length, which means that it is quite long, and provides for the usual license taxes upon persons doing business in the city, for shows, peddlers, and the various kinds of fakirs and grafters that are so numerous nowadays. Alderman ‘Uoudrum gave notice of his intention to introduce at next Council meeting an ordinance to regulate the ever present and always obnoxious hog pen. It will provide that no hogs shall Is allowed in the city during certain months of the year. The News heartily approves of the ordinances proposed by Mes srs. Cole and Goodrum, and be lieves (he people of Newnan w ill almost unanimously voice their approval. There should be strict regulations in regard to hogs and hog pens and it w ill be best not to allow any hogs in the city during the summer months. Again, too many obstructions arc allowed on our sidewalks; and there are num erous unsightly objects scattered about our streets that ought to be removed. Clear the sidewalks and clean up the streets, and let it be said of Newnan that it is the most spot less and orderly town in Georgia! That is a reputation worth striv ing for. Muble Paige is to appear at the Auditorium for three nights com mencing Monday night, and with her will be a great coterie of ac tors, actresses and vaudeville ar tists. Miss Paige lias always been the leader of companies playing at pop ular prices and this year she left all others far behind, for, surround ed as she is by the very best in the theatrical profession, there is no room for comparison. As everybody knows Miss Paige carries all her own scenery and properties that go make up the lies! plays that can he presented, aud when she appears here next Monday night in the great comedy drama “The Little Stowaway” the public will see a play that for the money was never equalled. Miss Paige, who has always been a great, favorite, especially with tlu> Indies, has some new French gowns thill have been voted by her admirers as dreams of daintiness and in “Camille” which will be the feature play the ladies will have a chance to study the latest New York mid Parisian modes. Prominent among the fashiona ble vaudvillc acts Unit have been engaged with this big com puny are tin 1 Desmond Trio, tbc dancing Creightons, Harold \V. Davis, the golden voiced tenor, in illustrated songs, and the moving pictures. IS IN SESSION. Busy Term of Court has Heard Criminal and Now Wrest ling with Civil Docket.
