I ■ CAN’T Most men are holding on to the coat tail of progress and shouting ‘ ‘whoa. ’ ’ Suppose you undertake something to better conditions, to build and equip a tietter school house, to improve and change outgrown methods. Try it when you will, you will always find a plentiful supply of fellows whc will tell you that you can’t de things. We recall an interesting story of a character named Uncle Silas Brown. He lived in a cer tain community in Alabama thal decided that among other things, it needed a railroad. Talk crys talized into definite conviction of the necessity. But from the very first Unle Si would say you can’t arouse interest in any plan for a railroad. But despite his dis couragement, a mass meeting was held and plans discussed for a company. Uncle Si made a verbose speech and emphatically assured them that no company could ever be organized. In the the face of his-growing pessimi s p the company was organized, officers elected, and books open ed for stock aubscriptions; Uncle Si all the while protesting that it could never be done. The money was raised and work actively be gun; but still Uncle Si would per sist that it would never be com pleted. ’Twas a gala day in the town, everybody in holiday attire All preparations had been made; the engine and cars were on the track at the station; everything was beautifully decorated for the occasion, the beginning of the maiden trip of the new train. The band has been playing but has now ceased while a few speeches are being made by prom inent men of the town. The en gineer has everything in readi ness, steam up, machinery oiled, Just before the start is to be made, a voice above everything else is heard to exclaim; “She will never run, dern her, she will bust.” Just so in actual life, you will always find those who will tell you that you can not do things. The man who reaps the richest rewards of life is the man who can take the initiative and ac complish something. The great problem seems to be to overcome our inertia. We would have been hiding in canes and dressed in skins and feathers till this day, but for the few who saw ahead and said we can improve condi tions. We know that often there seems to be no hope for any great immediate improvement. But always the seeming belies the real. Great things can be done right where we are. In fsct where we are is the place to work. No one doubts that we need im provement along many lines; but many doubt we are going to see any improvement. Lest we forget, Wilkinson County needs better roads, more people of a high class, improved agricultural conditions, In short we must have a greater Wilkin son County. With all this we need a high moral sentiment that puts the ban on all lawlessness. We are waging a campaign for - • ■ • ■ - * • everything that means progress, \ prosperity and happiness to th< ] people of this county. Are yoi \ with us, or are you in Uncle Sib ; flass? Let us be up and doing. = and let our watchword be on anc ? ever on. ROADS. Georgia ranks second in thej matter of improving roads a i nong the states of the union, as ; ihown by a report issued by the i lepartment of agriculture ati Washington. New York heads the list of; states which have made progress ■ in road building between 1904 and 1909, having built 6,911 niles of new road in that period. Georgia has built 4,344 miles of road in the five years. Alabama and Florida also have made great gains in build ing sand clay roads. There are but 190,467 miles of improved roads in this country, being only 8.66 per cent, of the total mileage, according to sta tistics gathered by the depart nent. it is estimated Liat a >out $2,000,000,000 will have to je spent before the United states has a proper road system- The people of Georgia cartain y have cause to congratulate hemselves upon this splendid showing. It is significant that ;he two empire states should be it the forefront in this line of mprovement. The insistent, the imperative lemand is for better roads. True t is no small problem in many ff the counties of Georgia. In Wilkinson county much wisdom oust be exercised to insure the best results. A dollar must be ised where it will do the great est possible good. We shall have a somewhat heavy burden as 'ong as our population is not more than it is now. TRADING AT HOME. Have you thought much about trading at home? It is the prop er thing to do; it insures pros oerity. Don’t you realize, Mr. Buyer, that when you send a dol - lar away you bid it good bye, but when you keep it circulating around home it will do splendid duty. One dollar spent at home and kept going the rounds can □ay many, many dollars worth of debts every month in the year. Is it strange that we dwell upon the idea of keeping our money at home, trading with our own merchants. Say, just give the Wilkinson county merchant a chance. Selfish? Well, just a bit. Os course when we think of up building Wilkinson County we are a bit selfish, along with oth er things. If the county grows and prospers we share in the good things. This would be true for everyone. Boost, man, it’s to your own interest. AN INSTANCE Possibility of our soil? Uncle “Bart” Stevens produced an average of fifty bushels of oats per acre, then a fraction over one thousand pounds of lint cot ton per acre on the same land in the same year. This was done , on land near Irwinton, and can be verified. There are thousands of acres just as good in Wilkinson County. We have farmers who are producing crops that would surprising and interesting. Motion Picture Show This entertainment will take place at Talmage Inst in this city on Apr.: 20th at 8;00 P. M.
