' WELL PLEASED WITH
THE JUDGES RULING
(From the Wrightsville Head
light.)
No judge ever struck a more
responsive cord in a white man’s
soul than did Judge Hawkins,
when he excluded the colored
people from the court room last
Wednesday.
A case was reached in which
the defendant was a young man
charged with betraying the con
fidence of a young girl. Neces
sarily the girl, with her life al
ready saddened and blighted,
was the principle witness
against him.
As soon as the case was call
ed, the Judge immediately or
dered the galleries cleared of all
negroes.
This -was the first time we
ever saw this done, and it meets
every white man’s approval. The
fact that stem justice often
forces white women into the
courts to redress their wrongs,
is in itself lamentable. But the
idea of compelling a white wom
an to relate the story of her
own betrayal for the ears of ne
gro men, is revolting beyond ex
pression. Why any judge ever
permitted the colored people to
remain in the room and listen to
the sad story of a white wom
an’s blighted life, as she is forc
ed to say things that she would
fain hide from sight, is indeed
beyond my comprehension.
The action of Judge Hawkins
is timely, and he is to be com
mended. It is an example that
every judge in the land could
well imitate without suffering
by the imitation.
U. D. C. Organi
zation
We have been requested to an
nounce that there will be a meet
ing in the court house audito
rium on Saturday, the 20th, this
month, for the purpose of or
ganizing a chapter of the United
Daughters of the Confederacy.
The U. D. C. is a great organ
ization and is wielding a great
influence throughout the length
and breadth of the Southland.
We could not do better than to
state the objects of the organiza
i tion. These are historical, edu
cational, memorial, benevolent
and social; to fulfill the duties of
charity to the needy survivors
of the war between the States;
j to collect and preserve the me-
L erial for a truthful history of
the war; to protect historic
olaces of the Confederacy; to
honor the memory of those who
served and those who fell in the
service of the Confederate
States; to record the part taken |
by Southern women, as well in I
intiring effort after the war in |
the reconstruction of the South,
’ as in patient endurance of hard
-1 ship and patriotic devotion dur
! | ing the struggle; and to cherish
ties of friendship among the
members of the society.
Those women entitled to mem
-1 beship in the chapter are the
! widows, wives, mothers, sisters,
’ nieces and descendants of such
men as served honorably in the
Confederate army, navy and
' civil service, or of those persons
i who loyally gave material aid to
• the cause. Also women and their
lineal descendants who can give
proof of their personal service
• and loyal aid to the Southern
- cause during the war.
We would say to our noble
> women thai this is something
• worthy of your attention, and
i we hope to see you come out and
> perfect the organization of a
chapter for Wilkinson county.
Let everybody be sure to
. come. Remember the day—Sat
- urday, the 20th inst.

After he was stabbed he drove
