A new kind of time clock has been

be fact that a positioning device au

hotor effects the release of the detent,
periodically. The primary motor
ihanges the printing types and inci
dentally furnishes energy to operate
I third motor, which actuates the card
positioning device. It is impossible
,o outwit this time clock as the time
s printed in a different part of the
ard every few minutes. Where an
imploye might alter one figure, or
fart of figures, he could not counter
feit an entire record or successfully

JEW WIRELESS EXPERIMENTS
iovernment to Test Limit of Capacity
! of High Power Station at Arling-
ton, Va.
—_
' The scout cruiser Salem, one of the
hree fastest vessels of her type in the
/orhl, has been detached from the
Jnited States Atlantic fleet, and has
jailed on a voyage across the Atlantic
o undertake the most extensive wire
ess experiments ever carried on by
he navy department. The purpose of
he voyage is to test to the limit of
ts capacity, if possible, the govern
aent’s high power wireless station at
Arlington, Va. An attempt will be
aade to keep the Salem in communi
j ation with the Arlington station
iractically all the time, both day and
fight, while she is steaming across
he Atlantic. Those wl\o designed the
station did so with the idea in mind
hat when operating at its highest ef
ficiency it would be able to communi
ate direct with London, Berlin, Paris
Ind other European cities, and also
hat it would be able to establish di
ject communication with the great
Ration the government is to erect on
(he Isthmus of Panama. Likewise, it
s believed that eventually the sta
i'on will be able to establish com
nunication with any warship in the

ance of more than three thousand

WILL ELECTRIFY BIG ISLAND
Tasmania to Have 85,000 Horse-Power
—Sufficient to Develop All Her
industries.
When the water power of Great
lake, in the center of the Island of
Tasmania, is harnessed to electric
generators the island will be almost
completely electrified.
The Island of Tasmania is located
south of Australia. Its area is a lit
tle over 26,000 miles and it has a
population of 191,000. In the middle
of the island at an altitude of 3,400
feet is the Great lake, a storage reser
voir provided by nature herself.
The area of this sheet of water is
forty-one of Tasmania's square miles.
The outlet of this lake is the
Shannon. At this outlet a comp*iy
has recently been formed to construct
a weir to regulate the flow. The wa
ter will then be diverted from the
Shannon into a lagoon, from which
steel pipes will be laid so as to cre
ate an effective fall of water for over
1,000 feet vertical.
It is calculated that in the power
house to be erected at the foot of this
fall electricity of the value of 85,000
horsepower can be generated all the
year round, sufficient to .work the de
veloping industries of the whole
island. ’
Hobart (the capital) in the south
and Launceton in the north will be
supplied from it, and there will be
ample power to work the important
mineral fields of the west coast as
well—the copper mines of Mount
Lyell, the tin mines of Bischoff and'
the silver mines of Zeehan.

Interesting Beginning.
A fair graduate was conversing with
a young gentleman who had been
presented to her after the commence

"Well,” she sighed happily, "I am
an A. B. now. Os .course you have a
degree?”
“Yes,” he replied, "but I am only ‘
a B.”
The fair grad pondered. The de
gree was puzzling.
“Why, what is that?” she asked.
“Bachelor,” he said.

The morning was young and beau

sheer delight as he watched the antics
of two little pups his neighbor had
bought a few days before.
“Oh, Amy, come here and see these
pups, over in Porter’s yard,” he called
to Mrs. Knox, who was busily ar
ranging the breakfast table. "Aren’t
they just having a circus? Bless ’em!”
he went on, with all the effusiveness
of a genuine dog lover. “Oh, look,
Amy, they have taken the morning pa

an end of it in his mouth, tussling
with it. Is there anything in the
world more cunning than a little
pup?” His enthusiasm was running
away with him. "I think, dearie, we !
will have to get a dog one of these I

The next morning Mr. Knox arose, I
dressed and went down to bring in the I

was just in time to see the cunning
little pups next door playfully tearing
his paper into shreds and each vanish

sullenly.

Original Sort of Ham.
A lady gave a luncheon recently and
explained that she always cooked ham
by the recipe used by Thomas Jeffer
son, which had been handed down in
her family for years.
This recipe required that the ham
be cooked for about two hours by
simmering, but, under no condition
must it be allowed to boil.
A ham was on the stove, its des
tinies presided over by a young col
ored woman from up in the mountains.
“Jane,” called the mistress of the
house, “don't let. that ham boil.”
“No’um,” replied Jane, "I ain't er
gwine to boil no ham. Its on the stove
now just a simpering!”

The young lawyer looked as solemn
as an old, sick owl, and said not a
word.
“I have a right to shoot the cat,
haven't I?”
T would hardly say that.” replied
young Coke Blackstone. “The cat
does not belong to you, as I under
stand it.”
"No. lyut the fence dees.”
“Then," concluded the light of law,
“I think it safe to say you have a
