An incompetent man is not
‘cheap at any price. A competent
is cheap at any price.
' Wilkinson county should ha ze
a puchasing agent, one under
bond one competent, and one who
follows the la Our slack way
of financing the county has
put taxes where they are now
almost outrageous*
There is a crazy man at Val
'dostu going around trying to get
up a collection to catch the Kai
ser. Mr. Mag you catch the
beast, and your Uncle Sam will
pay the coin.
A Dollar will pay just as bi ;a
debt now as it did five years a ^o-
Now is the time for the man in
debt to get out, lock the door
and throw the key away. Debt
is the worst master that an hon
est man evet had.
If Georgia can have one or t vo
more years of thirty cents cotton,
and a market for hogs and cows,
the Legislature will not have to
1 worry itself about foreign me rt
gage holders. Like the little boy’s
apple, there will not be any to
tax,
The fellows who write the
headlines in the dailies have dis
covered that “Boche” is some
kind of a beast, cuss word or a
German and they use it all the
time now. Dont change his name
German is the man we are aft er.
A good many people claim to be
“Teutonic Stock.” It seems that
Congress had a good many of
this kind of stock with them. We
would recomend the Shorthorn
or the Hereford, but a good many
like the Hampshire.
A man who had a tilt with his
girl, and who was contemplating
suicide came in and said, “Mr,,
how do you spell ‘grin-ncr?’
What kind of a ‘grinner’ do you
mean?” we asked. “I want to
• write that gal that I’m a grin
’ ner mind to kill myself.”
The following expressions have
been worked overtime
and should be allowed to rest:
; ‘ ‘Miss Jones spent the weekend
with relatives,” meaning any
■ time from Monday to Sunday.
“Do your bit”, which is to say
“do your darndest. ” Mr. Smith
and a party motored, ” that is to
say they “rid” in a Ford.
The county commissioners
should require all their records
to be examinied by competent
men once ? ymr. The grana
. jury is not c mpetent to make
the examination. When three or
four years have passed without
an examination, the fellow who
is found short has a good defense,
, for the records have been lost
or accidently burned up, end
• taxes clime each year.
The ladies wear high heels to
. make them look and walk queer;
' the young man in order to look
the same way put’ on a “pinch
■ back, ”so tight that he rears up
behind walks like a string-halted
chicken. Son, get on a pair of
; the old fashicned brogans, hold
j your head up and ‘ ‘gee-haw” old
Beck in the old fashioned way,
and some day you might resem
ble a.man.
Cheap cotton, the only money
crop that the South has ever had
hes not only kept the farmers
poor but has kept them uned
ucated. in order that
they might feed and clothe their
children, the children were
forced to remain out cf school
to work in the fields. Born in
debt, with interest at 10 and 15
per cent, the poor man has had
a hard time in the South. With
cotton at thirty cents the South
will become paosperous and edu '
cated.
The Ocmulgee Circuit has never
been afflicied with political jud
ges, and we hope that it never
will- In some counties, the “ins”
and the “outs” have a scene ov
er jury revisers, which destroys
even the appearance of honesty
in the courts. With a line of
distinguished Judges from Hon.
Peter Early, down to the time
of Jucges, Lawson, Jenkins,
Hart, Lewis and Park, it is too
late for the old Circuit to have a
scramble over the election of
the Judg\ When a Judge is
forced to go into tho byways
and hedges to curry favor with
the “voters” then miscarriage of
justice is on the march. All of
us have gone wild on the rule of
the “people,” not because it is
, right but because we think it is
popular. We do net believe that
the people want all the fool
l things we politicians give them.
, A live preacher is the greatest
• asset 1 ; to any county, A dead
one is not worth a blind mule.
. The fellow who objects to a
a preacher telling the congrega
tion about local rascality has a
, bout as much religion as a goat.
The old time religion was
pretty good in its day, for the
, Prince of Peace pornted at the
hypocrites and backsliders, called
. them by name, and exposed their
, rascality. The average church
• member wants to hear of the
I shortcomings of Jacob and Judas,
, | but he gets mad when he is told
*of his own faults. Praying on
, Sunday and shooting your neigh
' bars cow on Monday, ok man,
b ain’t religion, although you have
not been drunk in thirty years.
Helping your neighbor, assisting
the fallen and standing ior the
right thing is religion, even
if you do bke a “little too
much” some times.
Several fellow from adjoining
1 counties and counties from
a distance, and who
have always treated their labor
in such away that they will not
remain, have been to the differ-;
ent mines and sawmills in this J
county trying to persuade the lab
orers to go with them. We have
been asked tc advice tcprcve..v
this, The following remedy al
though not in the Code, has been
found to work well: Catch the
fellow on your works, pnth'ma-i
cross a log with his face towards
the South, apply a buggy trace on
the North side , just about the ■
Equator, give him his pass poets '
a box of salve, of and, star him off
in high.
A mnle is rather to be chosen i
than great riches, and farming
land rather than silver ana gold, I
yea, much fine gold. You can i
get this kind of land in Wilkin- i
son pretty cheap now, but you ;
can’t get it without paying doub-i
le in a year or two. Young man,
back to the farm.
When school opens next week,
don’t forget, Mr. Daddy, that
you can’t keep that boy out of
school all the lime. An ignorant
boy or man is liable to become a
charge on the state and coun
ty, either in the chaingang, and
in order to protect against this
the LAW says you must send him
to school r give a good reason why
you will not. Because you want
ti keepjhim at home to raise cot
tons and hogs instead of men and
women is no excuse, The offi
cas have been too slack in this
county in regard to this law*
THE BULLETIN, IRWINTON, GEORGIA.
Old Man, M e Are V> ith
j You
The man who seeks to arc use
i the people against our govern
: ment at this time is either a trait
or or a political demogogue. The
;tra j»r to America now is the
jman who belives that all men
i were not created equal, that a
\ few men should Lord it over the
1 masses, and that one man, a
; King or Kaiser, should rule over
;us. He'is opposed to freedom
J and free America. The dema
gogue is . the office seeker who
likes his job so well that he is
willing to sacrifice freedom for
political honor. Either is a men
ace and a disp race to our coun
try.
America, the greatest Republic
on earth, is in this war to keep
us free. Only a short time ago
as time goes, there was no place on
earth that the average man was
a freeman. We have been so
blessed in t.iis courtcy with
the doctrine that every man’s
house is his castle, and that the
poor man was equal to the rich,
that we cannot understand how
any nation can submit to the
tyrany of a Kaiser. The pol
1 tician rants about “freedom”
■ and with the same breath, in or
■ der to appeal to ignorance or
, predjudice, finds fault with
, those Who represent freedom.
, The politician believes in free
dom, but it is the freedom that
allows him to abuse the privi-,
leges that free America has giv
; en us tha. he might gain some
, selfish advantage, and to accom
plish this he is willing to see
. free men enslaved. I
History shows that Germany i
has never liked the United States.
We are too independent, too
’ proud, and too rich for this auto
; cratic despot. England and
: France have always been our
I friends. These two countries,
ruled by the people, made nop e
-1 parations for mure ering innocent
: men, women and children of
other nations. When the Ger
-1 man plans and plots of thirty
1 years broke loose, and murder
■ and brntality were on every hand
these twi nations, along with
1 Belgium, were unable to defend
themselves, and they gave
their men by the millions that
1 all men might be free. America,
tne cradle of freedom, stood pa
' tiently for months and years, hop
ing that the biute would be stop
bp his own people, and that Amer
icans would not have to pay the
price again, for freedom. Our
’ ships were destroyed, our men
i murdered, and our commerce
■stopped, v.hi e the Kaiser lavgh
led at our protests. In order to
: defend our hono r , and to pre
ser.'epeace tomankind, America
was forced into this war. The
r ation cannot fight without men
I and money, and it is a sacrifice
to give up either So great is
the confidence of a’l Americans
in America, there has never been
■ a shadow of a doubt as to the fi
nal result of the war.
i Mistakes will always be made
by the best of men, bu: when
i ten million men are sudd n'y ,
I called to arms, no man or s o; of
' men could handle the situation i
: without errors. The man who ’
1 seeks to advance hi i own inter- 1
ests by abusing the rulers of the ’
I nation in a crisis like this is un- ,
i worthy of the freedom that he c
he has enjoyed. s
There is no part of our co m- s
try that will be more benefitted ।
by the war than the South. f
Franc' and England ' had about c
gone their limit when Uncle Sam
stepped in. Had Germany cap- 1
tured the navies of the old world, £
he would have whipped America [ ‘
without firing a gun. We would 1 1
have been swept from the seas,) t
and all the produce of this nation 1
would have no market. 3 Cotton
would today be bringing three
cents a pound instead of thirty, i
and every southern bank and
business house would be in bank
ruptcy, and our people would be > j
‘ more poverty stricken than they * $
they were in 1865- While the
sacrifices are great, and will
grow greater,yet-the South,Geor
gia, and our own county should
stand by this nation toaman.it is
our country, and the future heme
of our chldren’s children. When
the mists have cleared away, the
world will be governed by free
men and uot by kings, and the
South, with prosperity on every
hand, will be the Garden Spot of
Earth. Down with the dema
gogue who would prolong the
the war with protests and abuse
who would sell the freedom of
his people for a little job and who
walk into office on the dead bod
ies of our boys. Let all sucn
men know that Wilkinson coun
ty is as true to her Government
of Liberty today, as she was true
and r ight in the war of 1861.
To The Wor.cn of Wilkinson County!
Our United States of America needs
you! Across the waters there is a hand
reaching out from the very depths of
Hell striving to draw into its damnable
depths your liberty, your sons, your gov
erumeut, your religion, and yea, even
you!
Do you read of the crimes against
Belgium womanhood? Then how dare
we hope for mercy at the hands of Ger
man cruelty?
Women, have you thought about all
this in its seriousness in its proximityi
Or do you think that this is “something
away over the seas,” which does not ।
affect me?
My dear women, what are you do
ing to aid in forming the forces which
can combat and keep away from our ,
United States this ENEMY? What cat |
we as women do? Right now —there is ‘
a call for us to buy libery bonds. You
know what this is. A bond will cost
you $50.00. You will be paid four pei
cent interest on it. Purchase it from
cashier of banks at Irwinton, Gordon
. and Toombsboro. If you haven’t the
I money they will loan it to you and will
not charge you any interest whatever
on it. The Government pays interest
You have just a few days longer in
which to do this. Our men are facing
the shell and shot and enduring the de
Ip.ivations to save our country? Yes
j hut in every man’s breast who is at the
I .ront, there is even a stronger feeling
for which he is fighting than that ol
for his country, he is fighting for the
WOMANHOOD of America!
Then surely we will loan our govern
ment enough money to feed and clothe
him while he is fighting for us. Yes.
of course we will, Let the women or
Wilkinson county respond at once to
this call. Show your love for your
country, for our boys, by getting a li
berty bond from a cashier’of one of
the banks of our county.
