Why Not?
Thomas, aged four, was having the
mysteries of the thunder storm ex
plained to him. His mother explained
that Ilie lightning was electricity in the
air, that God sent it and that the thun
der was caused by the bumping togeth
er of two clouds. Thomas parried with
the query, recalling that the back
fence kept him from communication
with the driveway beyond : “But, moth
er, why don't God build a fence be
tween the two clouds, so they can't
bump together?”
Chile Protects Mothers.
Consul General L. J. Keena of Val
paraiso reports that the Chilean gov
ernment has recently adopted meas
ures of consideration for mothers
working in factories. A special room
is to be provided in factories where
mothers may keep their children un
der one year of age and mothers may
spend one hour of the working day in
caring for their children without any
loss in wage.
Inspired by a Dream.
Musicians have been inspired by
dreams, but not all by so terrifying a
dream ns that which came to Guiseppi
Tartl’-i, the Italian composer, who
thought the evil one came to him and
compelled him to play the violin. He
awoke horrified, to find the strains he I
had been playing in his dream still I
ringing in his ears. He sat down and
committed them to paper, and thus •
was written the famous piece known
as “The Devil’s Sonata.”
Carrier Pigeons Still Used.
Even to day, when airplanes and
wireless play a conspicuous role, car
rier pigeons play their pari as well.
Fliers can be shot down, and wireless
messages might be taken up by enemy
operators. The pigeon, in many cases,
is the safest carrier, for seldom the
bird is shot down. As a rule four or
five pigeons are sent off with the same
message, to make sure tiiat at least
one will reach its destination.
Energy of Tides.
The net electric energy to be de
rived from the British tides is placed
by Prof. David Robertson at about
10.000 kilowatts per square mile for
a double tide of 31.5 feet and 500 kilo
watts for a tide of 7 feet. Places
offering a large inclosed area with
a comparatively short dam are the
promising ones for tidal utilization and
the British channel seems by far the
most advantageous situation in the
British isles, with the Firth of Clyde
