THE AMERICAN’S CREED
“I believe in the United States
of America as a government ol
the people, by the people, for
the people, whose just powers
are derived from the consent of
the governed; a democracy in a
republic; a sovereign nation ci
many sovereign states; a perfect
Union, one and inseparable; es
tablished upon those principles
of freedom, equality, justice and
humanity for which American
patriots sacrificed their lives and
fortunes.
I therefore believe it is my du
tz to my country to love it; to
support its Constitution; to obey
its laws; to respect its flag, and
to defend it against all enemi- s.
It makes one thrill to his fin
ger tips to read the above. It is
said that during the war a young
man had, by hook and cro.k,
evaded the draft law several
times. One day he cnanced to
read the above. He went imme
diately and volunteered for early
service.
Teday let us read and reread
“The American’s Creed” till we
thrill to our Anger tips and lend
ourselves for early service to the
best country in the world at
this time when she is threatened
with being torn asunder in a
manner like unto that from
which Russia suffered.
America is facing a crisis!
How can I help? What is my
duty? Our President answered
the question fully in his Labor
Day message when he said:
“Let him do all in his power
t > increase production; and fur
ther than that, let him at the
same time himself carefully
economize in the matter of con
sumption. By common action
in this direction we shall over
come a danger greater than the
danger of war. We will hold
steady a situation which is
fraught with possibilities of
hardship and suffering to a large
part of our population; we will
enable the processes of produc
tion, and we will speech the res
toration of an adequate purchas
ing power for wages.”
For five years the consump
tion, f the world has many,
many times exceeded the pro
duction—is it any wonder that
today we stand at a crisis?
Mr Wilson never uses idk
words. When he says “By com
mon action we shall overcome a
danger greater than the danger
of war,” he means just that-
Then if we are thoughtful
people we will follow the reme
dy for removal of danger. We
will economize, consume less and
produce more.
The average school in Georgia
is below what it should be, and
while the main reason is lack of
funds —which condition will be
largely remedied by the Elders-
Carswell tax bill— local school
boards ate .by no means blame
less in that they do not make
the best use always of the mon
ey they have to spend. The old
idea that anj woman of fair ed
ucation and any man who might
pass the book examination to
qualify were fit to teach school,
isgetting to be a thing of the
past. We know better now.
Teaching, especially in a coun
try school, is a big job if it is
properly done and one that re
quires the taalent, enthusiasm ■
and application of an exception-
al man or woman. —The Henry
County Weekly.

If the other countries continue
to warn Turkey that the massa
cre of Armenians must stop, an<;
the supply of Armenians doesn’t
give out before the Turks grow
weary and quit, it may yet be
stopped in time to save a rem
nant of the race.
With tae present price of ba
con and ham, we think the jury
in the justice of the peace court,
who were trying an old darkey
for stealing a hog, were justified
when they rendered the follow
ing verdict: “We, the jury, find
that the defendant stole the hog
but owing to the exigency of
the times and the high price of
meat we pronounce him not
guilty.”—Vidalia Advance.
Tick eradication generally is
progressing satisfactorily in all
of the states with the exception
of six counties distributed in
four states, according to state
meats of the Federal authorities.
The six counties mentioned had
been released from quarantine,
but it has been found necessary
to requarantine them until the
local courts and county officials
show a disposition to cooperate
properly with the State and Fed
eral governments in the final
clean-up work. It is the belief
that county courts and other of
ficials will soon realize that that
a discontinuance of their efforts
to complete the work is very ex
pensive, not only to the county
but to individual cattle owners,
in that it is necessary practical
ly to repeat the work and incur
at least the same expenses as
when tick eradication was first
taken up in the county.
666 has more imitations than any
other Chill and Fever Tonic on the
market, but no one wants imitations,
they are dangerous things in the
medicine line.adv

NOISE BARS SLEEP
Airplane Factories Are Not Good
Neighbors.
France Warns U. S.: Don’t Build
Plants Near Human
Habitation.
Paris.—With the certainty that avia
tion is quickly to become one of the
big industries throughout the entire
world, Paris has a little warning for
all of her sister cities of America and
every other country.
The warning is this: Enact imme
diately, either state, municipal or na
tional, legislation prohibiting the erec
tion of airplane factories anywhere
within hearing distance of where hu
man beings have to live and sleep.
Otherwise, said human beings won’t
be able to sleep and will be driven in
no time at all either into their graves
or some far-away sanitarium.
Everyone knows how much rumpus
an airplane makes when it is flying
thousands of feet overhead. Well,
every airplane motor before it is
mounted has to be tested, and to be
tested it is attached to a huge bench
or platform and run continuously at
top speed, with hundreds of horse
power back of it, for at least twenty
four hours and sometimes forty-eight.
During that period of time nobody
living within hearable distance can
possibly sleep.
At Suresnes, where motors are test
ed for forty-eight hours, it has been
necessary to close an adjacent school.
At Puteaux the inhabitants declare
they have not slept for months.
At Courbevoie the city council has
resigned as a means of protest.
At Clichy the city has bought a large
tract of land for the erection of a mu
nicipal hospital. Airplane factories
during the war installed themselves in
the vicinity and the medical authori
ties now refuse to let the city build its
hospital in such a death-insuring lo
cality.
The department of the Seine has
been forced in the interest of public
health to take measures to stop the
airplane factories and get them moved
into more isolated localities.
