A Mood
A life all languorous and filled with idle dreams,
Mere pleasing mockeries, as empty, but as bright
As some tinseled pageantry in circustime that streams
Down past me, far into the ghostly, deep'ning night.
’Tis true I live in dreams, the gladdest hours I know,
In friendships fanciful and love that is ideal.
They vanish! Dare I murmur at the passing of the show?
It served my purpose well. I did not wish them real.
But if, with passing time there comes a dreamless day,—
It turns me chill and shuddering —the thought of such a fate;
If these gay fantasies that through my mind now sway
Should leave me mournfully alone, some day, when 'tis too late.
To come, for comforting, to mortals I naw shun,—
If dream sick, shadow weary, would my fellow creatures stand.
Faces indifferent, turn from me one by one?
While I, ah! Heaven above!-I grasp a phantom hand!
—Mary Tigner.
