CONDENSED
Atlanta.—Thieves broke the lock off
the filling station of former Chief of
Police James L. Beavers at 851 Lee
street, the other morning. Patrol
man Carrol], who discovered the brok
en lock, was of the opinion that the
thief did not get inside, but was
frightened away at his approach. No
report of any loss was made.
Waycross.—Clarence Barber, 13-
year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. C. B.
Barber of Astoria, was fatally injured
while walking on the Dixie highway,
accompanied by his father, when_Jjit
by a passing autoist, who failed to
stop. The injured boy was placed
in a car and rushed to Waycross, but
died before reaching the hospital. The
driver of the car was coming toward
Waycross. The sheriff’s forces and
officials of neighboring counties hava
been notified and given a description
of the car.
Atlanta.—Gussie Hill, 13, negress,
charged with attempting to kill Ber
tha Nell Strother, 8 months, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Strother, of
Howell Mill road, by mixing carbolic
acid with soothing syrup which had
been given the child, was found guilty
in Fulton superior court. The jury
recommended that the case be treated
as a misdemeanor and Judge J. D.
Humphries imposed a sentence of 12
months on the state farm at Milledge
ville. The sentence imposed was the
minimum. ,
Atlanta. —New trials in two mur
der cases were ordered by the Geor
gia supreme court in handing down
decisions reversing judgment of the
lower courts. The two cases are those
of Silas Paramore of Seminole coun
ty, who was convicted and sentenced
to be hanged for the killing of Jeff
Williams, policeman, of Iron City; and
Robert Hill, Macon negro, who was
sentenced to life imprisonment for the
murder of J. W. Culpepper of Macon.
In the Paramore case, the supreme
court held that an officer has no legal
right to shoot a man charged with
a misdemeanor, even though that man
may be attempting to escape arrest.
Gainesville. —A campaign to urge
the state highway department to in
clude the Cherokee trail in the Geor
gia highway system was begun re
cently. A motorcade from Canton,
Waleska and Cumming reached
Gainesville and gave hearty endorse
ment to the proposal at a meeting of
the Cherokee Trails Highway associ
ation. More than forty interested in
the new highway were included in the
party which is touring the route of the
new highway. Friends of the move
to include the new highway in the
state highway system pointed out that
it is the only road across the state
north of Atlanta, which will connect
the Apalachian Scenic highway and
the Piedmont Air Line highway at
Gainesville and the Dixie highway and
the highway to Birmingham at Rome.
Louisville. —Eli Williford and two of
his daughters, Leona and Elizabeth,
are in jail following the death of
Mrs. K. P. Walden of Grange, wife of
K. P. Walden, for several terms tax
collector of Jefferson county and a
widely known citizen. Mrs. Walden
died of a stroke of paralysis which
followed a severe fright caused when
Williford came to the Walden home
armed with a shotgun. After her
death a peace warrant was taken out
for Williford, and when Sheriff D. C.
Thomas and a deputy, Otis Stevens,
attempted to serve it, they were met
near the Willford home by the young
women, who demanded that they
leave, according to officers. Both the
■women were armed with shotguns and
automatic "pistols and after disarming
them they and the father were lodged
in jail, the officers declared.
Atlanta. —Governor Walker receiv
ed from Judge Peter W. Meldrim, of
Savannah, his resignation as a mem
ber of the board of the Georgia In
dustrial school at Savananh. This
board was abolished by act of the gen
eral assembly of 1924. It was a self
perpetuating board, and in abolishing
it the new law authorized the gover
nor to appoint a new board of five
members, the governor to fill vacan
cies from time to time. The governor
announced several weeks ago that he
would appoint his new board upon his
return from his Cuban trip. Judge
Meldrim has been chairman of this
board since the foundation of the Geor
gia Industrial school, and he feels
now that the work should pass into
younger hands. As judge of the su
perior court of Chatham county, to
which position he was re-elected only
last, year for a term of six years, he
feels that his public service on the
bench is all that might be expected
from a man of his years. The gover
nor has written Judge Meldrim ex
pressing his appreciation of the serv
ice rendered by him as a member of
this board and accepting his resigna
tion with regret. The governor says
he will name the new board soon.
Columbus. —Mrs. Mary Shepherd, 42,
is dead and her husband, R. L. Shep
herd, 56, a carpenter, charged with
having slashed her throat with a knife,
is being held without bond on a mur
der charge. The killing was the re
sult of an argument starting about
Shepherd attending a lodge meeting,
according to the prisoner. The trag
edy occurred in the back yard of the
Shepherd residence, after the hus
band is alleged to have pushed his
wife, with a 10-months-old babe in
her arms, down the back steps.

Mother! It’s Cruel to
“Physic” Your Child
To Dr. W. B. Caldwell of Monticello,
111., a practicing physician for 47 years,
it, seemed cruel that so many consti
pated infants and children had to be ;
kept constantly “stirred up” and half
sick by taking cathartic pills, tablets,
salts, calomel and nasty oils.
| While he knew that constipation
was the cause of nearly all children’s
little ills, he did not believe that a
sickening “purge” or "physic” every
day or two was necessary.
In Dr. Caidwell’s Syrup Pepsin he
discovered a laxative which regulates
the bowels. A single dose will estab
