It appears that the high tariff Canada
Conservatives have defeated the Lib
erals. who. under Mackenzie King,
have ruled Canada for the past four
years. The general election returns
show: Conservatives 115 members of
the lower house; Liberal 86; Progres
sives 9; Independents 2. A majority
of one requires 123 seats.
It is announced in Moscow that an
ancient submerged city has been dis
covered near Shikov, a sand? bank on
the Caspilan sea. It is stated that un
der the bright sunshine one is able
to distinguish streets and buildings of
ancient Asiatic architecture.
Benito Mussolini, the Italian pre
mier, announces to the world that Fas
cism intends to control the destiny of
Italy until overthrown by force.
Tn the same room where Woodrow
Wilson, in the closing days of the
peace conference, read out the arti
cles of the league of nations covenant,
and when M. Clemenceau, as presi
dent, declared them adopted, the
council of the league delivered what is
virtually an ultimatum to Greece and
Bulgaria that they must uncondition
ally and within 24 hours order all
their troops to retire behind their re
spective frontiers.
M. Caillaux, who was generally con
sidered a man of the political past,
showed that he was still a factor of
the present by obliging the cabinet,
against its will, to take into considera
tion, his financial projects, when he
was asked to resign by Premier Pain
leve of France, the man who had re
cently brought him back into the poli
tics of France.
The United States next year prob
ably will see the autogiro, a semi
helicopter airplane, the invention of
Don Juan de Cierva, a Spaniard, which
has astonished British aero experts.
The British government may. adopt

All the leading chemical concerns
in Germany have organized a trust

Drastic action to insure the move

will not aply to live stock, perisha
bles, petroleum and its products, food
stuff materials used in preparing the
fruit and vegetable crop for shipment
or fertilizer materials.
Pearls and jewelry valued at $54.-
000 were taken by two gunmen in
Los Angeles the other night from
Mrs. L. M. Smith, wife of a bank pres
ident, and Mesdames J. M. Mac Adam
and H. H. Clark, as they were return
ing frop a theater.
Samuel M. Ralston, late t-enator
from Indiana, left an estate of nine

probate recently, listed real estate
at $75,000 and personal property 15.-
000, the bulk of which is left to his

The will of Thomas Franklyn Man
ville, head of the Johns-Manville com
pany, who died October 19 in New
York City, was filed for probate, and
it is estimated that the estate is eas
ily worth $25,000,000.
Paul D. Rust, Boston capitalist, the
owner of 100,000 acres of timber land,
has sold his entire holdings to the
Dierks Lumber company of Hot
Springs, Ark., for a consideration of
threp and a half million dollars.
Miss Mildred Fineberg of Trenton,
N. J., was married at Harrisburg, Pa.,
by proxy to Edward Winfield of Chu
quicamato, Chile, The bridegroom’s
father acted in his place.
Twenty dead and more than thirty
injured is the known toll taken when
the Sunnyland, fast St. Louis and San
Francisco passenger train, left the
rails near. Victoria, Miss., and tumbled
into a tangled mass down a forty-foot
embankment. At least twenty per
sons were killed outright or died be
fore a relief train could reach the
scene and possibly twice that num
ber were injured.
Funeral services were held in a
Broadway, New York, church for
Mrs. Lillian N. Duke, divorced widow
of James B. Duke, who after witness
ing the funeral parade of her late
husband, went home, went to bed and
died. Only twenty-five people were
in attendance at her funeral.
In New York the other day the po
lice raided the basement of the Elks’
club in West Forty-third street and
seized nine kegs of alleged beer and
arrested the driver of a wagon in
which the beverage had just been de
livered to the club.
Several Chicago office holders, of
ficials of Joliet, Aurora and Peoria,
ten Chicago police captains and em
ployees of five railroads have been
drawn into the federal investigation
of Chicago’s nine million dollar a year
beer syndicate.
Four trainmen were Injured, two
probably fatally, when Atlantic Coast
Line train number 35, bound for Au
gusta, Ga., was derailed one mile south
of Lone Star, S. C.
One man was killed and his com
panion fatally injured at Birmingham
when the automobile in which they
were riding was struck by a street car
on a viaduct.
Dr. Henry Jacob Waters, interna
tionaly known agricultural expert and
editor of the. Weekly Kansas City
(Mo.) Star, died recently of pneumo
nia.
Under a verdict of not guilty re
turned by a jury in the United States
district court at Macon, J. Clark
Middlebroolcs, sheriff of Jones coun
ty, was sentenced to eighteen months
in'the Atlanta penitentiary, and G. E.
Rape, former Jones county policeman,
to a year and a day.
Launching a movement to make the
Republican party a political force in
the South, the Southern States Repub
lican League has massed its force for
a drive on the solid Democratic South,
, it is announced by Birmingham, Ala.,
