JIT HAD always been such & nice,
J2j deceptive way in which to speak
of specially delicious and delect
able sweets—sugar plums.
Her grandmother had called candies
and candled fruits and luscious bon
bons “sugar hlums.” And she had
always, because she liked candled
fruits so particularly, called them
“sugar plums.” i
It had been seventeen years since
(Rose had first retaembered hearing of
“sugar plums.” She had been three
then, and her grandmother had said

in the wise, wise way that grandmoth
er always had of knowing what was
what, “Yes, only Santa Claus knows
how to get the choicest of sugar
plums.”
Rose was very busy getting ready
for Christmas. It was a busy time
in the family. There were mince pies
to be made and plum puddings, and
almonds to salt, and fudge to make,
and wreaths to make, and bells to
fix, and fresh candles to put in the
candle-sticks —red candles at this
time of the year.
It was a time for general cheer, and
from Rose’s family a great share of
this cheer went forth.
It was not that they were wealthy.
They were, in fact, the opposite.
But It was their great satisfaction
that by hard work and great energy
of spirit they could do a great deal in
a small way for every one with whom
they came in contact at this season of
the year.
Every present, no matter how sim
ple, was prettily wrapped. There was
no condescension in their giving. To
them it was a big part of their Christ
mas delight that they knew so many
people with whom they could share
their Christmas sacrifices and the re
sult of the late hours they kept for
weeks before Christmas in their innu
merable small preparations. Saving
was always such fun throughout the
early autumn. Os what fun was sav-,
Ing if it were all to be forever hid
den?
There were two presents awaiting
Christmas morning for Rose t/b un
wrap. They were for her and she had
taken them in when they had eirrlved,
but she had not opened thenj.
She was curious about these pres
ents. She knew they would be quite
simple, but one was from Billy sod
e- was from Joe, and both Biniy and
THE BULLETIN, IRWINTON, GEORGIA.
Joe had lately been running a race,
as It were, for Rose’s acceptance of
engagements, for her favors.
She liked Billy much better than
she did Joe. She knew that Billy
liked her. She knew that Joe liked
her, too. She felt that Joe would al
ways make her very comfortable,
would always be very kind, very duti
ful, and that she would always have
to be dutiful, too.
Os course, that was all right But
she felt that with Billy she would
want to make him so very happy, and
with Joe, that it would be so much
more of a duty.
Yet Joe was more reliable, he was
less Irresponsible, less spontaneous,
and so much more exact But Billy
was such a dear!
She could label all Joe’s good
points. Billy’s were less tangible, but
they were there, all right even if she
couldn’t name them.
She helped her mother with the last
Christmas Eve touches, covered the
fire over with ashes, put out the
lights and finally went to bed.
The next morning she opened Joe’s
present first Somehow she wanted
to keep Billy’s to the last the way
she had done with things when she
was a child.
There was a little note with Joe's
present, telling her what she knew
he had been wanting to tell her for
a long time —how much he thought of
her, what a good wife he knew she
would be—of that, he said, he was
confident And he hoped she would be
of the same opinion about him. He
would make her, he was quite sure,
a good husband.
Then there was a word about the
present He bad not known what to
give her this year; he knew she had
all of those things which, as their
positions now were, were the only
things be could give her, but his moth
er had suggested a very complete sew
ing-box
There was no note with Billy’s pre»j
ent. Just a card upon which he had
written:
“I think you like these ‘sugar plum’
things. Merry Christmas.” It was
a wholly unreasonably large box of
candied fruit.
Later Billy himself came around.
What a dear he was! Oh, yes, Billy
lift
"Crazy Present I Gave You," Billy
Wai Saying.
was a dear. And they had mistletoe,
too, and Billy was grabbing her and
was saying: •
“Crazy present I gave you, but I
know you like sugar plums; and, any
way, I had in mind a diamond ring,
but just thought I’d speak to you about
it first”
Billy had. his own ideas. "Sugar
PbUBS.”' joe had consulted his moth
er and there had been a sewing box
Oh, she couldn’t tell just why,per
haps, but she did love Billy and she
didn’t love Joe. Perhaps it was b*
cause Billy was just a dear.
“The ‘sugar plums’ win,” she said,
and I’d love the diamond ring.”
Billy didn’t quite understand the
first part of her sentence, but he did
the last—and, after all, that was all
that was necessary!

FEEDING LAYING
, HEN IS REAL ART
Much of the success in winter egg
production Is obtained from a bucket
ful of feed in one hand and a bucket
ful of common sense in the other.
Feeding the laying hen is a real art,
for so much depends upon the poultry
man’s decision each day in the matter
so that his birds will work most effi
ciently.
The feeder is a skilled mechanic
who systematically holds the birds
up to 50 to 60 per cent production
from November 1 to the following fall,
without causing a slump in egg produc
tion and at the same time maintaining
their health and vigor.
One of the first prerequisites in feed
ing Is to understand what the egg con
sists of. It is made up of a.jolk,
white, shell, and is two-thirds w®y.
The yolk Is fat and is made from
feeding fatty or starchy foods, as corn,
wheat and oats.
The white is animal protein, which
is made from material such as meat
and milk.
The shell Is made mostly of calcium,
which is found in certain kinds of
stone and oyster shell. In order to
aid In the digestion of all of these
foods some bulk is desirable which Is
green and succulent, such as sprouted
oats, mangel beets, cabbage, etc.
In order for these foods to be prop
erly digested, an abundance of grit
should be available, as this acts as the
hen’s teeth In grinding the food In the
gizzard.
Water Is cheap. Have It before the
birds at all times.
Legume Hay Helps Solve
the Green Feed Problem
Legume hay helps solve the winter
green feed problem for the chickens.
Experiments in Ohio, Kansas, Texas,
and California seem to indicate defi
nitely that where no other source of
green feed is available the addition of
a legume hay will increase the num
ber of eggs produced and their
hatchability. It will also reduce the
mortality from nutritional troubles,
points out G. S. Vickers, extension
specialist In poultry at the Ohio State
university.
Save the hay with the most leaves
and the greenest color for the chickens.
An easy way to feed chickens hay Is
to provide a rack along the wall and
keep hay before them all the time. A
trough along the bottom of the rack
will catch all the leaves that would
otherwise be wasted. These can be
fed from the mash hopper.
Alfalfa meal may be used If good
hay cannot be bought at reasonable
prices. The meal should be used In
the mash. About 10 per cent alfalfa
meal will substitute for a like amount
of bran. A combination of mangel
beets and legume hay makes a good
winter combination to use instead of
sprouted oats. It may be that hay
Is about to take the place of our old
reliable, but troublesome, sprouted
oats as a winter green feed.
