Notes on the Georgia
Situation

’'See Georgia First”, a movement
which ajms to make Georgians better
acquainted with their State, and to
attract non-Georgians to visit and
invest in Georgia, is taking root and
flourishing, and the progress so fir
made is due almost entirely to the
loyal, enthusiastic support which the
Georg'a weekly newspapers are giv
ing it.
The daily papers are no less inter
ested thah their colleagues of the
weekly press, but the daily newspa
pers have a daily, imperative problem
of' playing up” the news to keep
the iron hot and sustain circulation.
In the nature of things, they have
not the leisure or space to give con
sistent, persistent attention to move
ments of this sort.

"Why”, asks a reader, "Is the
caliber of football played in the South
today so much faster than it was 15
years ago?”
Personally I think the answer lies
in the importation of foreign coaches
and the missionary gridiron work
their pupils have done out in the hin
terland.
In the old days boys reported for
college football, knowing little or
practically nothing about the sport.
So the coach quite naturally was com
pelled to start them in the first grade
of fundamental training. In other
words it was necessary for him to
teach them their A B C’s before he
could even consider giving them a
play.
They had to learn to block and
tackle and in many cases even the
rules of our great American fall con
test.
Now, however, a high school foot
ball player enters college thoroughly
drilled in fundamentals and the men-
tor thus is enabled to start him right
off the proverbial bat in offensive
training.
Then, too, in the old days a col
lege seldom had over one coach Now
they have a large staff and no longer
is one man forced to attend to every
detail.
