The Old Garrison Road
Judging from several letters
sent in to The Macon Telegraph,
it seems that considerable pres
sure is being brought to pave the
Old Garrison Road- The paving
of this road, ’tis true, would be
of benefit to a good many people,
but doesn’t it seem rather ex
travagant and unwise, under the
present conditions, to pave an
other road when there is already
a hard surface road running
practically parallel with the Old
Garrison Road, and connecting
Milledgeville and Macon? And
What about Wilkinson county?
Are we going to be forced to eat
dust the rest of our lives? If
there is to be any extensive pav
ing done in the Sixth District the
sensible thing to do is to give
Wilkinson her share, for there
is certainly no county in the
State where it is needed worse.
We have asked for pavement
here and have been promised.
We have asked again with the
same result. .What next to do?
Well, sometimes when friendli
ness and requests won’t work,
maybe agitation will. This dis
crimination should be stopped!
It has always seemed strange
why the people of Macon and
Milledgeville won’t wake up and
realize the situation down here
in Wilkinson. Surely they real
ize that it would be to their ben
efit to get these roads paved.
But is there any great effort be
ing put forth to this end? What’s
the matter? Wake up Macon!
Wakeup Milledgeville! Give us
a break down here! It would be
to your gain as well as ours.
Exceeds Red Cross Quota
I take this manner in express
ing to the people of Wilkinson
County my sincere thanks for
their splendid cooperation and
liberal donations in raising funds
for the storm stricken areas of
Cordele and Gainesville.
The Red Cross quota for this
county was S4OO. This has been
reached, and at present we have
credit for nearly SSOO, including
merchandise valued at about $75.
The Wilkinson County Red
Cross Chapter will get credit foi
these funds, and by so doing
will be placed in very fine stand
ing with the National Chapter—
( something to be desired, for one
, can never tell when nor where
a tornado will strike next. How
’ ever, I do not feel that the peo
ple had this in mind, nor do I
feel that they gave from a sense
I of duty. I rather think that all
. of us gave voluntarily and with
' a humane feeling in our hearts
for our fellow man. It has in
deed been a pleasure to see peo
ple respond so readily to this
worthy cause.

to these hefty fellows from the

Ida Hughs was cultured and conse

As a charter member of John Ball
